Zidane tops FIFA list

France inspiration Zinedine Zidane heads the 10-strong FIFA list of contenders for the Golden Ball. The 1998 World Cup winner is favourite to pick up the award presented to the tournament's most valuable player after guiding his nation to Sunday's final.

But the Real Madrid star - set to hang up his boots after the tournament climax in Berlin - will face stiff competition from Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro should he lift the ultimate prize in the Olympic Stadium.
There are four Italians and three Frenchman in the running with Portugal's Maniche and Germany duo Michael Ballack and Miroslav Klose completing the candidates.
