So there it is! The first practice session was Red Bull's, the second is McLaren's! Day one of the Melbourne Grand Prix ends with Button having posted the fastest time and with all teams having learned a great deal about their new cars and their Pirelli tyres.
Luizzi is out! He's got two and a half minutes! What a day for HRT!
Wasn't it the McLaren cars who finished the practice sessions on top last year? And who went on to win the race? Button.
But the big news is that an HRT car may be about to get out and about for at least a lap!
So, it's Button from Hamilton, from Alonso, from the Red Bulls of Vettel and Webber.
Ah, having said that, the heavens have now opened and it's unlikely now that we'll see much improvement this session.
Flecks of rain appear once again on the track. But, in fairness, the weather has not seriously interrupted the second practice session.
There's a suggestion that there's a tail wind behind the cars as the head down the home straight at the moment.
Schumacher, Massa, Perez, Barrichello and Rosberg complete the top 10 behind the McLarens and the Red Bulls and Alonso.
Glock glides off the track, not for the first time today.
Just Fernando Alonso in his Ferrari breaking up the McLaren-Red Bull domination at the top of the timesheets at the moment. The Spaniard is currently third quickest.
Vettel finishes his 29th lap of the day as he moves fourth fastest with a 1:26.014.
Button responds with a 1.25.854 as McLaren now assume the top two positions.
Hamilton now goes quickest with a 1.25.986! To give you an idea, the pole time from Vettel last year was 123.919. This is just second free practice after all. Plenty more to come.
That's it! Twice race winner Button goes top with a 1:23.156 as a Red Bull car again sets the pace.
Button is flying here and we could have a new pacesetter in a minute...
Buemi runs wide and hits the gravel as the sun comes out in Melbourne!
Hamilton looks quick on this lap but he gets held up before the home straight and the chance goes begging.
Hamilton attacks turn one again as he looks to better his time which sees him occupy third place at the moment.
Vettel's car is still causing consternation. The left side of the front wing is close to the ground and it seems it's scraping on the track too much.
Massa and Glock both go for spins, but neither is too serious.
Look at this though, Schumacher goes quickest with a 1:26.590! He's on softer tyres this session and it's showing.
Alonso crosses the line to post a 1:27.766 and move into fourth place.
Button clocks the fastest lap we've seen all weekend with a 1.26.706 to climb to the top of the timesheets!
The rain is showing no signs of abating and it looks like that earlier weather report might have been erroneous. That said, Melbourne is notorious for being the city where you can experience all four seasons in one day, so perhaps a glorious evening is just around the corner...
Looks like the weather has taken a turn for the worse as the skies turn dark and a few drops of rain are felt.
Vettel radios in to say he's feeling vibrations in the front end of the car. Perhaps more problems with that front left side?
Rosberg, Button, Massa, Schumacher, Petrov and Alonso follow Hamilton for the time being.
Trulli goes off at turn 4! But his skid is nowhere near as bad as team-mate Chandhok's earlier effort and he's soon back on track.
Hamilton breaks 1min27secs for the first time this session with a 1:26.961. The McLaren driver is closing in on Webber's effort in the first session.
Formula One strugglers Hispania (HRT) worked through the night to get their cars ready for Friday practice for the Australian Grand Prix, but drivers Narain Karthikeyan and Vitantonio Liuzzi failed to get out of the garage for the first session.
Hamilton posts a 1:270.56 to knock Massa off top spot, after he had bettered Schumacher's best effort.
Schumacher has improved his first session best time by around half a second - good start to the second session from the Mercedes man!
Vettel is told on his radio not to use to the wing adjustment on the front straight. They want him to simulate race conditions.
But the good news is that there is no more rain forecast. That's according to Timo Glock's radio.
Another small shower is hitting the track now which might make things interesting.
Here we go! Under way once again! An hour and a half of practice to come.
Tweet of the day so far: "Just leaving to track - this morning for me is going to be slightly longer runs than normal aimed at learning car & tyres & not laptimes." Longer runs? Karun Chandhok was assuming he wouldn't skid off with less than a minute of the first practice session gone!
We're nearly ready to go. The clouds are still filling the skies and there has been a few spots of rain down on the track. And the wind is still up.
Red Bull's Mark Webber went quickest in Free Practice One, pipping team-mate and world champion Sebastian Vettel on the final lap of the earlier session.
Hello and welcome back to our live coverage of the second of the day's practice sessions from the season opening Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne.
