So, Vettel paces the third practice session, ahead of team-mate Webber and the McLaren pair of Hamilton and Button. No surprises there. Petrov in fifth ahead of Alonso, Kobayashi, Rosberg, Heidfeld and Schumacher.
Button is still out there and he moves up to fourth.
Things are heating up as the final practice session nears an end! Vettel, Webber, Hamilton, Petrov, Button, Alonso, Kobayashi, Roberg and Heidfeld with less than two minutes remaining.
Vettel proves just how quick the Red Bull car is with a barnstorming 1:24.507! That's quick from the defending world champion!
Vettel's best time was done on the harder tyres...
Webber looks quick in the first sector... he's a tenth off in sector two... and he can't better Vettel's time.
Bad news for Williams - it seems that there is an oil leak in Barrichello's gear box, which are not expected to last five races.
But that's a better from Massa as he rises to seventh, despite what looks like a loose camera fitting on his cockpit.
Massa's struggled so far today - he's down in 15th and far from showing the form of his team-mate Alonso.
So, the Red Bulls and McLarens with Alonso's Ferrari occupying the top five again now.
Here's Hamilton looking to improve on the softer of the two Pirelli tyres... he's using the DRS to good effect and he takes third with his best lap yet!
Vettel goes to the top of the standings with the fastest time of the weekend so far! 1:25.327 is the time to beat now. Button, Alonso now and Webber complete the top four. Buemi is a surprise entry in fifth, ahead of Petrov in sixth.
Perez seems to have a problem as he limps into the pit lane at a snail's pace. Hamilton has to be aware not to slam into the back of him as he enters!
Time now for Button to put in a quick lap - 1:25.961 - to go top. Hamilton up to seventh with a 1:27.796...
The top of the order is beginning to adopt a familar feel now as Red Bull's Webber goes top with a 1:26.993. Team-mate Vettel is second, followed by Mercedes' Rosberg and Button. Hamilton down in 15th at the moment.
So, Vettel, Rosberg, Button, Petrov, Webber and Heidfed lead the way so far during this third practice session.
Paul di Resta goes a little wide as he looks to get to grips with the Albert Park circuit on his F1 debut.
Just half an hour remaining before the real serious stuff starts!
World champion Vettel posts a 1:27.337 to go top for the moment.
The crane is over to Maldonado's car quickly to lift it off the track and back to the pits.
Maldonado is next to slide off the track and into the gravel in sector eight. He's beached down there and he'll need some help to get out.
Schumacher is gearing up and looking a lot busier than he did yesterday. He goes into third and Petrov's best time is surely in imminent danger.
Petrov again goes faster... 1:28.385 is the time to beat at the moment.
Button locks the right front and the McLaren man slides off into the gravel!
Vitaly Petrov is top of the timesheets at the moment - he's posted a 1:31.119.
Hispania on the radio: "We've lost all connection to the car." The depressing answer to from Luizzi is: "Me too."
Liuzzi is out on track! But not for long! His car is being wheeled back off as Hispania's problems continue. This really is proving to be a miserable weekend for the team.
Plenty of new rules and regs to get our heads around this season. The good news is that we've put togther a handy guide to make things a little more simple.
So Red Bull have already set out their stall this weekend, as have McLaren. And with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso posting the third quickest time in the second session yesterday, the Italian team are sure to be up there too.
And then in the second session, Jenson Button - last year's winner here in Melbourne - was quickest.
Yesterday, we saw home favourite Mark Webber pace the first practice session, putting in the fastest lap on his final effort.
Hispania look like they might be able to actually get a car out on track today - they only managed a minute or so yesterday - but word is they are having to use a front panel from last year's car, which will upset the balance of the aerodynamics.
Just a quick word about the weather in Melbourne today - it's dry for the timebeing, with a track temperature of 22 degrees and an air temperature of 16 degrees. It's overcast again, but no rain is forecast for the next hour. Hopefully the session will remain dry.
This session is just 60 minutes as the teams are given a final chance to run the rule over their cars before this evening's qualifying.
Here we go! The third and final practice session gets under way!
