A time of 1:35.766 is good enough for pole position. Hamilton appeared to throw it away, having led for some time. Why did he let his teammate pass?

0'

An excellent final lap from Vettel, who initially crosses the line with the fastest time of the day, only for Rosberg to go even faster. Nico Rosberg is on pole for the British Grand Prix.

1'

Rosberg, looking to oust his teammate in these final stages, gets on the radio to tell his Mercedes team that "Lewis needs to speed up."

2'

Ricciardo has stood out of his car and won't set another timed lap. Vettel, who still hasn't clocked a time, is on the track and will have time for a hot lap.

3'

With a little under three minutes remaining, Button makes his way back out onto the track. The Brit will attempt to improve upon his seventh place.

4'

In fact, the rain looks to be getting worse. The track has lost that typically grey look, and is now looking rather dark. Vettel is yet to register a time in Q3. He has just over 3 minutes to get out there.

5'

Quite a bizarre decision from Vettel there. His team have instructed him to go back out in a few minutes as they believe the rain has stopped. It most certainly has not.

6'

Vettel is down in tenth at the moment, currently going through the rainy section of the track, but the German aborts the lap and pits.

7'

Hamilton goes fastest. The Mercedes driver clocks a 1:39.232, with his teammate coming in a close second. Provisional pole for the Brit.

9'

The track continues to get wetter and wetter. The qualifying times may all be about the here and now. This next few minutes may determine how the drivers line up tomorrow.

10'

Fernando Alonso, who will start tomorrow in 19th, spoke about his disappointing qualifying session. He told the BBC: "It happens sometimes in this weather, 30 second before or later, you put the right tyre on and you are the hero or you have made a mistake. We are here in the TV compound, two Ferrari drivers and two Williams drivers, it's something we did wrong compared to other teams. We need to study what happened."

11'

Ricciardo has been instructed to stay away from the limiter in the 3rd and 4th gear as the car is losing performance. How will that affect his chances of getting on the grid?

12'

Q3 under way. Ten cars to battle it out for pole position. Red Bull's reigning world champion Vettel is out first.

0'

Hamilton fastest in Q2, then. Those to miss out are: Grosjean, Bianchi, Chilton, Gutierrez, Maldonado and Sutil.

0'

The chance of a first Q3 appearance for Marussia is over, with the two drivers in the drop zone. They won't improve upon their respective lap times now.

1'

Hamilton goes fastest with just over a minute to go. 1:35.000. Gutierrez's Sauber has span off the track and goes into the barriers. That could cause some problems for those yet to clock their final lap.

2'

Those that have gone out early on slicks will have time to come in and change their tyres. The leaderboard will surely all change in these final few minutes.

3'

Grosjean has a strange problem. He’s in the pits and his rear axel is spinning – something of which he can’t stop.

7'

Nico Rosberg has come into the pits to change over onto the slicks. We'll see how that goes. Vettel now comes in to do the same.

9'

Lotus' Maldonado and Grosjean are looking very good out on track. The pair have been keeping pace with those at the top of the leaderboard.

10'

Hamilton, no matter how he goes past the grandstand, receives a huge round of applause from the crowd. The home-favourite beats his teammate's time by 6/100 of a second. A Mercedes one-two at present.

11'

Vergne tops the leaderboard for just a matter of seconds before Rosberg, who is having a good-old scrap with Hamilton, beats his time by almost 2 seconds.

12'

Ricciardo posts the first timed lap of WQ2. A time of 1:47.955 is the time to beat.

13'

Raikkonen has just been giving an interview after missing out of this session. He's blaming his performance on bad luck, and has said that if he doesn't improve on his position then there is "something seriously wrong."

14'

Everyone bar Rosberg and Hamilton are out on track. Sutil, whose car was stuck in the gravel right at the end of Q1, will take no further part.

15'

So, Q2 is under way. And for only the second time in their history, both Marussia cars are through.

0'

So, those to miss out are: Bottas, Massa, Alonso, Raikkonen, Maldonado, Ericsson and Kobayashi.

0'

Wow. That's quite a shock, then. BOTH Ferraris and Williams drivers are out after Q1.

0'

All the drivers crossing the line for the final time of Q1. Fernando Alonso in real trouble, and he's caused a problem for his teammate, too.

1'

Alonso, in the bottom four at the minute, loses control of his car and will not make up the time. It looks like the Spaniard will be out here.

2'

Button's time has been deleted, for exceeding the track limits on the final turn. Kyvat instead crosses the line with a time of 1:41.032.

3'

Button now fastest with a time of 1:39.791 - despite losing control on the final corner. He did go wide, but it looked out of his control. Still, a quick time, and it should count.

4'

Max Chilton goes second quickest on the slick tyres, whilst Jensen Button's car squirrels out of control on the final corner.

6'

Kevin Magnussen has been on the radio to tell his team that they won't go any quicker on his current tyres. His team are hesitant to let him back into the pit straight away for fear of losing brake temperature.

7'

A number of drivers coming in and changing for the dry tyres. Jules Bianchi clocks a very quick time and goes ninth fastest so far.

8'

Rosberg asking the question of whether he should be on slicks. His team respond, letting him know that the only danger of adopting that tactic is that they would have no new tyres for the race.

9'

Hamilton currently leads from Ricciardo, Rosberg, Vettel and Alonso. Massa one of just two drivers yet to post a lap time. A very tentative drive from the Brazilian.

10'

Sergio Perez's team have been in communication, letting him know that there is more rain on the pitwall - incinuating that it is time to start posting timed laps.

11'

Kimi Raikkonen goes very wide on turn 18 and almost goes into the gravel. That won't help him set a timed lap.

12'

Home-favourite Lewis Hamilton now goes quickest with a time of 1:43.676. Valtteri Bottas is the only driver not out on the track at present.

13'

Despite the rain, Nico Rosberg has been on the radio to his team to tell them that the track is very dry, apart from turn 8.

14'

Gutierrez clocks the first timed lap of this first qualifying session. A time of 1:46.701 is the time to beat at the minute.

15'

The spitting rain looks to be turning a little heavier over the Silverstone track. All 19 cars on the track are currently on the intermediate rubber.

16'

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton is now out on the track on a set of intermediates - a popular choice at the start of Q1.

18'

We're under way at Silverstone. This should be a greasy qualifying session. Max Chilton, who has been given a five-place grid penalty, is the first one out.

12:55

We're now just five minutes away from the start of this qualifying session. Red Bull's Vettel will be confident of getting on the grid after an impressive free practice, but he'll be unsure of Mercedes' pace. Damp conditions should make for an entertaining session here.

12:50

World champion Sebastian Vettel led the way in the third and final free practice session, making the most of the wet conditions, as neither of the Mercedes drivers bothered to set a timed lap.

12:45

Good afternoon and welcome to LIVE coverage of the qualifying session for the British Grand Prix at a damp and dreary Silverstone.
