Canadian Grand Prix: Disappointment for Hamilton as Vettel takes lead

It was won at the start. Sebastian Vettel led from start to finish, staying at the front for every single lap, and the top six stayed the same save for Daniel Ricciardo leaping ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

Second-placed Valtteri Bottas made an effort to close the gap on the race leader, but his Mercedes just didn't have the pace to challenge.

It was also won slightly early - model Winnie Harlow was mistakenly told to wave the chequered flag prematurely, bringing the race to a close.

Vettel carried on anyway, but the race result was decided on a countback to Lap 68 according to the rulebook.

Two stars out of five. Hamilton complained about loss of power, which affected his performance, obviously; but he didn't help himself with some of the track positioning errors that he made. He now drops a point behind Vettel in the championship standings.

The absolute dead silence from Fernando Alonso as his McLaren team instructed him to retire his car in his 300th career F1 race was both poignant and strangely hilarious. He didn't reply even to the apology from his race engineer: "Sorry, mate. Gutted."

Max Verstappen kept close to Bottas as best he could - and later confessed to a little bit of contact between his Red Bull and the Mercedes at the start, shrugging it off with, "That's racing, isn't it?" The young Dutchman also logged the fastest lap of the day; his neverending aggression might sometimes land him in trouble, but as a general rule his determination and ability to see a move where nobody else ever could are both entertaining.

Very little in the way of overtaking in Montreal, with the safety car limiting opportunities at the start and the truncated number of laps limiting them at the end.

Red Bull bringing Daniel Ricciardo in on Lap 18 meant an undercut on Hamilton when he returned to the track. The Mercedes had a poor pit stop a while earlier, and then ran wide at Turn 2, losing time and eventually losing position.

Charles Leclerc is quietly having an excellent season with Sauber, and got another great result today, finishing in tenth place.

Congratulations also to Romain Grosjean who had a much better race than qualifying, and took the time to mock himself a little following his clash with a groundhog during free practice.

Montreal's Lance Stroll, in his home race, made a spectacular impact in his Williams, but not the one for which he would have wished, crashing out in stunning style and sending Toro Rosso's Brendon Hartley into the air as well.

Singer Ciara and football star husband Russell Wilson popped in to say hi to Mercedes.
