Vettel has gone straight into the FIA garage to get an explanation regarding the five-second time penalty that he was handed. So we won't get to hear from the German for a while.

A bizarre, bizarre race. Vettel domnated from start to finish, but one mistake cost him. Although the German will argue that it was the time penalty that cost him. He is fuming on the team radio.

VETTEL CROSSES THE LINE FIRST, HAMILTON WINS! Figure that one out! Hamilton didn't have the pace, even with the DRS, to get past the Ferrari, but it didn't matter in the end. The five second time penalty cost Vettel!

Stroll up into P9 after passing Sainz! Kyvat also gets past Sainz! Just one lap left of the Canadian GP. A quick glance at the standings... 1) Vettel 2) Hamilton 3) Leclerc 4) Bottas 5) Verstappen 6) Ricciardo 7) Hulkenberg

Vettel leads Hamilton by 0.6 seconds. It's looking very likely that the Mercedes will claim the race victory even if it's a Ferrari that crosses the line first. Leclerc might even finish second as well!

This is the discussion point! This one will rumble on!

An update from down the standing - Bottas is still in P4 and Stroll is holding on to P10 which would be a great point gained for the Racing Point driver. Leclerc is really pushing right now.

It's not looking likely that Vettel will get that five second lead he needs to keep hold of the race victory. The gap between the front two right now stands at just over half a second.

An update from down the standings...

Vettel has to get his head back in the race here because he only has seven laps left to build a five second lead over Hamilton otherwise this race victory will be snatched away from him.

Vettel is still disputing the time penalty on the team radio. "They are stealing the race from us!" complains the German. "Stay focused" comes the replay back from his team.

"Have we got any more power?" says Hamilton on the team radio. He's wary of the fact that after the time penalty Vettel will be trying with everything he has got to build a strong lead. Hamilton needs to stick with the Ferrari!

Leclerc has just set a new fastest lap of 1.14.672, but between now and the end of the race it's all about the battle between Vettel and Hamilton. The gap stands at just over 2.5 seconds.

VETTEL TIME PENALTY! Wow! Vettel, the race leader, has been given a FIVE SECOND time penalty for dangerously rejoining the track after his back end locked up. He very nearly went into Hamilton. That could be huge!

It feels like the battle between Vettel and Hamilton is just building up for one last showdown in the final few laps. There's a gap of around 1.5 seconds between the two race leaders.

Magnussen is down in P18 and has just vented on the team radio. "This is the worst experience I have had in any car in any race ever." Well, that's not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Keep in mind that Ferrari have yet to score a race win in 2019. This could well be their season on the line if they are to stand any chance of keeping pace with the Mercedes.

"He just came on the track, so dangerous" Hamilton said into his team radio. The investigation into the two race leaders is still ongoing. Vettel has just lapped Albon in the Torro Rosso.

Indeed, the stewards are investigating that incident between Vettel and Hamilton. Did the race leader rejoin the track in a dangerous manner? Hamilton was somewhat forced into the wall.

Hamilton is arguing that Vettel rejoined the race with a dangerous piece of driving and he might potentially have a case. It was into Turn Four that the Ferrari made the mistake. Yikes!

VETTEL GOES WIDE! Has Vettel just got away with a massive error? Hamilton thought there was a gap after the Ferrari's back end locked up. That was lucky, lucky, lucky for the race leader!

Stroll has finally come in to change off those hard compound tyres that he started the race with and the strategy seems to have paid off because he has emerged in the points in P10!

Bottas has just set a new fastest lap of 1.14.933. Meanwhile, Hamilton has got Vettel's lead down to around 0.7 seconds. The Mercedes has the race leader in his sights (eyes emoji)!

"Brake pedal almost on the floor" shouts Verstappen into his team radio. That is not good news for the Red Bull. That's something to keep an eye on. There's still a long way to g.

There are still 26 laps of this race to go. Are the front two going to slog this out right the way until the end? This has become a real fight between Vettel in P1 and Hamilton in P2.

Aaargh! Just as Hamilton as putting the heat on Vettel the Mercedes goes wide into turn 10 and that was clumsy, allowing the gap to widen out to over a second again.

Hamilton closing it up! The Mercedes is really on the tail of the race leader. Hamilton has got the gap down to under one second after a couple of very fast laps! This is getting interesting.

Bottas passes! The Mercedes is up into P5 as he gets past Ricciardo. He had the pace on the Renault and really should have made the pass a lap or two before he actually did.

Vettel leads Hamilton by 2.5 seconds and Leclerc is 1.5 seconds ahead of Verstappen in P3. Over half the race has now passed. Hamilton has just set the new fastest lap of the race.

Leclerc passes Verstappen! The Red Bull has yet to pit and didn't really put up much of a fight as the Ferrari passes him on the back straight. So the front three are back in the top three positions after pitting.

Ricciardo holds on to P5! Bottas had the run on the Australian, but then backed off as Ricciardo defended. Bottas should have had the advantage with the DRS, but Ricciardo wasn't about to give up that place!

This was a couple laps ago.

LECLERC INTO THE PITS! The Ferrari is now in to change on to the hard compounds and that means Vettal will regain the lead of this race. Leclerc is out behind Verstappen in P4.

Nicely done! Perez in typically aggressive fashion gets down the inside of Grosjean into P1, touches and edges the Haas into the run off. Good use of DRS from the Mexican. Up into P13.

Yellow flag being waved in sector one as Giovinazzi gets himself back on to the track. Bottas has been told to "box, box, box." Leclerc also seems a bit confused about his strategy.

HAMILTON INTO THE PITS! Nice pit stop from the Mercedes team and the Brit is out ahead of Bottas into P3. Vettal has just set a new fastest lap. Hamilton wasn't happy with his tyres there. He was fuming down the radio.

Hamilton is pushing now to give himself a chance of coming out ahead of Vettal when he Mercedes pits. On the radio just now: "We don't have the gap so we're going to extend as much as possible."

VETTAL INTO THE PITS! The Ferrari comes into the pits to change on to the hard tyres. Hamilton is freed to lead the race. Vettal is done in 2.7 seconds and he is out in P3 ahead of the chasing pack. That worked well.

Ferrari on the radio to Vettal: "Push now, push now." Is that the signal that the race leader is about to change off the medium tyres? Looks like it will be Ferrari that blinks first.

Hamilton is eating into Vettal's lead. The Mercedes has got the gap down to 1.7 seconds. Leclerc has also just set a new fastest lap. 3.1 seconds to Hamilton in P2.

This is what I was talking about!

Leclerc is on the medium tyres, so might the 'Plan B' that was just communicated to him over the radio be that he will pit before Vettal? Or is it a change to a one-stop strategy? Hmmm...

Vettal's lead over Hamilton has been stretched to 2.377 seconds. Leclarc has just set the new fastest lap of 1.16.533. The Ferraris have been on good pace so far. Leclerc has just been told by his team that they're moving on to 'Plan B,' whatever that is.

Hulkenberg has been in and out, swapping on to the hard compounds.

Wooft! Giovinazzi very nearly went into the Wall of Champions there, but he makes contacts with his wheels, tags it and gets away from trouble. A few good racers have ended up in that wall.

There's just seven seconds between the top three, but there's then a 13 second gap between Leclerc and Hulkenberg. The front three are separating themselves from the pack.

Nice pass from Kyvat on Magnussen. He went around the outside of Magnussen into Turn One and is now actually up into P13 ahead of Perez. Impressive season he's having.

Bottas is up to fifth place, but the Mercedes are still to pit. Hulkenberg is up is fourth as well. Of course, Bottas is on the medium compounds rather than the softs. He's got a while to go.

The yellow flags are no longer being waved and we're racing again. Vettal has a gap of over two seconds on Hamilton. There's 4.3 seconds from Leclarc to Hamilton. Good pace from the Ferraris.

We're on yellow flags after the incident involving Norris. The Brit seemed to pick up a brake issue that melted his rear suspension. Initially it looked like he had drifted into the run off.

NORRIS' RACE IS OVER! Not sure what happened, but the McLaren seems to have a brake or suspension issue and his race is over. That's such a shame because the rookie had had a good weekend up until that point!

Pit stops! Ricciardo is on to the hard tyres and so is Raikkonen! We'll update you with the standings when things settle after the pit stops.

Gasly into the pits! That's Red Bull's first pit of the race and it's Gasly who is changing on to the hard compounds. Bottas and Hulkenberg move up into fifth and sixth respectively.

Sainz was in and out the pits in 3.9 secs to switch on to the hard tyres. That's an early change off the softs.

After the first seven laps this is how the standings are - 1) Vettal 2) Hamilton 3) Leclerc 4) Ricciardo 5) Gasly. As we were on the grid, but things will change. It's been an electric start. Leclerc has just set new fastest lap.

Into the pits! Albon was down in the pits early on. He was the meat in the sandwich. There was no chance of him avoiding contact there and the Toro Rosso is now at the back.

Vettal has built up an advantage of over one second on Hamilton which means that the Mercedes is out of the DRS zone. This has been a good start from the German. Exactly what he would have wanted.

Norris into eighth! Fantastic from the rookie who gets past Verstappen and up into eighth position. It has been a chaotic start. Vettal has made a good start and has a gap on Hamilton.

Lights out! Vettal and Hamilton get a good start into Turn One, Leclarc has a look at the Mercedes, but can't find the space around the outside and the grid holds into the first lap!

Okay, the formation lap is under way. Vettal surely needs to come out of Turn One still ahead of Hamilton, who has pulled off some great passes so far this season. Anticipation!

Grid: 1) Vettal 2) Hamilton 3) Leclerc 4) Ricciardo 5) Gasly 6) Bottas 7) Hulkenberg 8) Norris 9) Verstappen 10) Kvyat 11) Sainz 12) Giovinazzi 13) Albon 14) Grosjean 15) Perez 16) Raikkonen 17) Stroll 18) Russell 19) Kubica 20) Magnussen (pit lane)

Is today the day that Ferrari start their fight back? Keep in mind that Vettal and Leclerc between them are without a win in 2019! They are in P1 and P3 on the grid respectively.

Hamilton: "I hate losing, but you cannot sulk. You have got to move on and be tough. I hate losing. It doesn't matter if it's playing ping pong, the Playstation, in my races, playing cards - I don't like losing." He's in P2.

It's been a while!

Back on top? For the first time in 12 months (!) Sebastian Vettal is on pole. The German demolished Lewis Hamilton's lap time in qualifying and knocked his rival into second spot on the grid. Vettal's Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc is third on the grid.
