This should make for an interesting time in qualifying, which gets under way at 1pm UK time - join us then!

So, Fernando Alonso tops the pile in the morning session. And it is absolutely teeming down now! Monsoon stuff in the pit lane.

2'

The rain is really coming down now, and almost every driver dives for the safety of the pits. Kamui Kobayashi makes his way tentatively round on slicks.

5'

No improvement from Button, who gets some opposite lock going as he skids into a left-hander. The rain makes further improvements impossible, and there is no time for a meaningful change in setup.

6'

Jenson Button is on a 'hot' lap. He is currently P23, so he could do with a quickie...

8'

The TV shot shows fans donning their rain coats. If it starts to rain now, that will pretty much end the session.

10'

Massa is wide again, piling over astroturf, gravel and grass. Hmm...

13'

The clouds continue to gather but no rain yet. Alonso P1 1:16.014, eight hundredths ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Sergio Perez third.

15'

Heikki Kovalainen's Caterham is sitting very low, with sparks coming off the track...

19'

Good job from Marussia changing Charles Pic's engine so quickly - he is in the car and ready to come out on the track.

22'

P1 Hamilton - 1:16.091. It has been a pretty miserable season for McLaren - how they could do with a result this weekend.

24'

A couple more moments - Massa goes wide over the run-off area, as does Timo Glock.

27'

Alonso goes P1 - 1:16.124 for the Spaniard, who leads the drivers championship and is in great form.

30'

The hourly forecast for Hockenheim predicts more sustained rain this afternoon - but not until 16:00 German time, an hour after qualifying ends. As we have seen, though, things change fast.

33'

The weather charts suggest there could be rain before the end of the hour! And there was me saying things were looking up.

37'

Marussia have also confirmed that Maria De Villota has left hospital in the UK and returned to Spain after her crash in testing that cost ther the sight in one eye.

39'

As for Pic, well Marussia have confirmed that he has had an engine change and they are hoping to get him out before the end of the session.

42'

Every driver bar Charles Pic has set a timed lap. And it's a familiar face at the top of the timesheet - Sebastian Vettel with a 1:16.876 ahead of yesterday's pace-setter Pastor Maldonado.

46'

A couple of drivers running wide - Webber uses the run-off area, while Nico Hulken berg has a big lock-up.

49'

Rosberg goes quickest with a 1:17.892, over 2.8 seconds faster than the next man, Kimi Raikkonen! That will change, of course.

52'

After yesterday's showers, things are very much looking up at Hockenheim. It is a cloudy morning, but it's light and fluffy rather than grey and ominous. Air temperature 18C, track termperature 26C.

55'

Every driver bar Paul Di Resta and Charles Pic has been out in these early stages. Kimi Raikkonen is fastest with a 1:20.927 lap early on.

58'

Some breaking news at the start of the session - Mark Webber and Romaion Grosjean have both changed their gearbox, thereby incurring five-place grid penalties. Nico Rosberg has already suffered the same fate.

Welcome to LIVE coverage of the final practice session for the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. The session is under way in improved conditions, and there are cars on the track already.
