WHERE THE RACE WAS WON

A spell of rain made this race very interesting for the final third. Sebastian Vettel looked like he was going to bring in a Ferrari one-two before running into a wall and looking thoroughly livid with himself.
The safety car went in ten laps from the end, and Valtteri Bottas, on fresher tyres, decided to have a go at overtaking then-leader Lewis Hamilton.
The Finn just ended up losing time and allowing Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen to close the gap in third - no wonder Mercedes radioed through to tell him just to hold position. Bottas did as instructed, protecting his team-mate, who took the chequered flag with a four-second advantage.
It was Mercedes's first one-two in Germany - and allowed them back to the top of the constructors' championship.

HAMILTON-WATCH

Five stars out of five. A tremendous drive as Hamilton battled his way through a packed field from 14th to top of the podium. He benefited from Vettel's misfortune, but also performed brilliantly himself.

PIT RADIO EXCHANGE OF THE DAY

"This is just silly... I'm losing time, destroying my tyres." Sebastian Vettel was not happy to be stuck behind team-mate Kimi Raikkonen at the halfway point, with recurring lock-ups. "Don't you see the tyre temperature? So what are you waiting for?" Shortly afterwards, Raikkonen was reminded that both cars need to take care of their tyres, and that they were on different strategies; the Finn demanded that they make their team orders clear before acquiescing and letting the championship leader through to take the lead.

MOVE OF THE RACE

Charles Leclerc's effort to perform a pirouette in a Sauber was interesting.

BEST OVERTAKE

Beautiful driving from the ever-reliable-for-a-good-overtake Daniel Ricciardo, positively gliding past Charles Leclerc's Sauber on Lap 20.

TACTICAL MASTERSTROKE

Brave from Mercedes, keeping Hamilton on track until the last possible second before putting him onto ultrasofts in his first stop.
Other teams started to panic a little, hoping for more rain, and sticking their drivers on intermediates - it did not pay off for Max Verstappen, for example - and the Ferraris got their cars in very early, before the weather changed. The Silver Arrows held their nerve and kept Hamilton out there.

UNSUNG HERO

Shout-out to Esteban Ocon of Force India, who started in 15th place on the grid and took the flag in eighth. Not spectacular, but solid, and a decent haul of points for his team.

FACEPALM OF THE WEEKEND

Red Bull! After Ricciardo started from the back of the grid due to changes in his power unit, he ended up retiring on Lap 29, reporting power problems once again. He'd been driving so well and these issues need to be fixed.

STAR-SPOTTING

Former champion Nico Rosberg was at Hockenheim - and was apparently slated to do the post-race interviews before he was replaced by David Coulthard.
Shame. It's always fun to see Rosberg and Hamilton obliged to be polite to each other.
