Lewis Hamilton: 'Disrespectful' F1 star fails to remove hat during silence for Justin Wilson

The F1 world champion and his fellow drivers honoured Wilson, who died on 23 August in an accident at an IndyCar race in Pennsylvania.

The Briton competed in 16 F1 races for Minardi and Jaguar in 2003.

Hamilton was the only driver to leave his headgear on during the silence for Wilson.

British ex-F1 star and Sky Sports expert Johnny Herbert was among those to voice their displeasure.

Hamilton followed the minute’s silence by posting a tribute to Wilson on Twitter.

OUR VIEW: Everything Lewis Hamilton does attracts attention, so we should hardly be surprised at the storm created here. Should the reigning champion and pre-eminent F1 personality have the sense and sensitivity to remove his cap? Probably, yes. But anyone who believes it was a result of anything other than carelessness or forgetfulness is simply wrong. Hamilton has no earthly reason to disrespect Wilson’s memory. This was simply an unfortunate oversight.
