WHERE THE RACE WAS WON

Eight laps from the end, when Lewis Hamilton moved past Kimi Raikkonen to assume the lead.
The Finn had been the oldest polesitter that Monza has ever seen. He made a great start, keeping out of the chaos that unfolded behind him, and stayed calm through the rest of the race.
Meanwhile, Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel had some kind of contact in the first lap, sending the Ferrari spinning. It was assessed by the stewards as a racing incident, and left the German far down the field and with plenty of work to do. In the end, P4 for him wasn't too bad.
While Hamilton and Raikkonen vied for the lead, Max Verstappen spent his afternoon quietly moving his Red Bull through the field to finish third - but he then got a time penalty for pushing out Valtteri Bottas.

HAMILTON-WATCH

Five stars out of five. There was little else Hamilton could have done - excellent aggressive driving, pushing his championship rival down the field from the off, and giving Raikkonen plenty to think about before making his move eight laps from the end.

PIT RADIO EXCHANGE OF THE WEEKEND

"Smoke, I've got smoke." Daniel Ricciardo has no luck at all with his engine. This is the C-spec, and it doesn't seem any better than the ones he suffered with previously.

MOVE OF THE RACE

WHAT a move from Hamilton after the safety car went in on Lap 2, encouraging Raikkonen towards the right of the track and then sliding past - and then the Finn came right back at him, using the slipstream in the straight.

BEST OVERTAKE

Max Verstappen's brilliantly-executed piece of overtaking past Esteban Ocon to move into P5 after his pitstop set him up perfectly for his third-place finish.

TACTICAL MASTERSTROKE

Mercedes were a little more tentative than Ferrari, with eyes on the skies just in case the weather intervened, and pitting Hamilton later, leaving him with fresh tyres to attack Raikkonen on Lap 45.

UNSUNG HERO

Shout-out as always to the ever-hard-done-by Valtteri Bottas, who did an excellent job of holding up Raikkonen for several laps after the pitstop, keeping him well behind him and generally making a nuisance of himself to the Ferrari. He got some praise over the radio from the Mercedes team, but very little love from the partisan Italian crowd.

FACEPALM OF THE WEEKEND

A nice bit of comfort fail from McLaren - Fernando Alonso was hailed as a returning hero by the tifosi, and then retired from the race after ten laps because his engine stopped working.

STAR-SPOTTING

If you want AC Milan legends, Monza was the place to be this weekend.
And athlete Wayde van Niekerk was hanging out in the paddock with Felipe Massa.
