The Briton, who had been slower than Rosberg throughout practice, clocked a lap of 1:22.000, nearly three tenths of a second faster than Rosberg who starts second on the grid.
Hamilton made an error on his first lap of Q3 but pulled it all together to claim his third pole position of the season. He will be desperate to convert pole position into his first race win of 2016, and end Rosberg's run of six straight victories.
Mercedes have now taken 11 poles in a row, with Rosberg aiming for his eighth successive victory on Sunday and hoping to become only the third driver to win the first five races of a season. The German is 43 points ahead of Hamilton.
Red Bull surprisingly ousted Ferrari from the second row of the grid, with Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen third and fourth on the grid.
Fernando Alonso took McLaren into Q3 for the first time this season, and will start 10th on the grid.
