Injury rules Turvey out of Formula E finale

The NIO driver struck the barriers at the exit of the final left-hand corner on the Brooklyn Circuit track in the Red Hook port neighbourhood in New York as he was completing a 200kW qualifying simulation lap.

An FIA bulletin initially explained that "Due to injuries sustained in an incident today Oliver Turvey will be withdrawn from round 11 and 12 of the New York ePrix".

A NIO statement explaining Turvey's absence from qualifying read: "This morning, during the second practice session for Round 11 of the ABB Formula E championship in Brooklyn, New York, #16 NIO 003 driver Oliver Turvey made heavy contact with the outside wall at Turn 14 on his second qualifying simulation run.

"Having returned to the NIO Formula E team garage Oliver felt unwell and was taken to the medical centre at Red Hook circuit.

"The decision was then made to further examine Oliver's left hand in hospital."

Turvey was able to return to the pits but did not take part in qualifying following the incident as he was transferred to hospital.

The team later provided a second update following Turvey's examination, revealing he has broken fractured his fifth metacarpal (little finger).

NIO has since confirmed that its reserve driver Ma Quing Hua will take Turvey's place for the Sunday race.
