Britain's Greg Owen recorded the first hole-in-one of the week at the par-three eighth in the Scottish Open final round on Sunday. The 33-year-old Englishman achieved his first ace on the European Tour with a nine-iron from 139 yards. It was the 27th hole
The feat is unlikely, though, to help Owen in his bid to clinch a place at next weekend's British Open by finishing as the highest non-exempt player at Loch Lomond.
Having started the day at eight under par and seven strokes off the lead, he was still five off the pace at 10 under with 10 holes to play.
The Briton, who has played mainly on the PGA Tour this year, was one of three players controversially bypassed earlier this week when Bob Tway earned a British Open exemption after the withdrawal of fellow American Billy Mayfair.
Owen and Americans Arron Oberholser and Jeff Maggert were also not exempt for the Open and held higher world rankings than Tway.
However, the trio were overlooked by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club (R&A) because all three had withdrawn from last month's U.S. leg of international qualifying in Summit, New Jersey.
"Having pulled out of the IFQ (international final qualifying event), they were deemed to have pulled out of the Open championship," an R&A spokesman explained.
