Jon Rahm is the defending champion, but the Spanish icon is competing with the likes of Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa. Major winners Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson are out early on Saturday in the third round.

00:52 – Rahm takes double bogey on 18

A round of 71 from big Jon after two putts on 18. So disappointing to finish in that manner. He drops back to -3, one off the pace set by Zalatoris and Fitzpatrick. Can't take anything for granted on this course.

00:48 – Rahm in deep trouble on 18

Has knocked his drive in the fairway bunker. Butchers his attempt with second shot. Still in fairway bunker and ends up plugging his third shot in a bunker in front of the green. Well out with the third shot, but has two putts for a double bogey and one for a bogey. So he is going to fall out of the lead.

00:45 – Rory concludes with 73

A fighting performance. So many single putts on the back nine to keep alive his hopes. At -1, still well in the conversation for the trophy on Sunday, but will need to play better from tee to green. There is nothing wrong with the putting stroke.

00:37 – Fitzpatrick aims to emulate 2013 US Amateur title win at Brookline

"I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought about it," he said. "It would just mean the world. It's obviously a special place for me for obvious reasons, and to go one step further and win a US Open around here would just be even more special.

"The US Amateur was one of the biggest achievements of my career and I would still class it as one today. If I was lucky enough to play well tomorrow and win a major, it would definitely overtake it."

00:30 – Rahm moves clear at the top

A birdie at the 17th green. Superb approach shot with his second pitch and big Jon slams home the 10 footer. Three birdies in past four holes. The defending champion in the box seat with one hole left of his 3rd round.

00:15 – Rahm joins the party to lead

Big Jon has just refused to go away today. A birdie 3 from distance at the 15th hole. Stunning from the defending champion and he joins Zalatoris and Fitzpatrick. What is left for the former world No 1? Almost another birdie at 16th, but just short of pace. Two holes left for JR.

00:07 – Fitzpatrick drops one

A fine round of 68 from Matt Fitzpatrick. Tough old bunker shot on 18 and took two putts to get down from distance. So Zalatoris and Fitzpatrick are tied at the top on -4 and could be out in the final group on Sunday.

23:50 – Fitzpatrick moves clear at top

Never really in doubt. Has found his form at exactly the right time on this third day and he gets himself to -5 with birdie on 17. Magnificent concentration levels from the 2013 US amateur champion, who is chasing a par up the 18th hole for a round of 67. That would be his best of the week in the toughest of conditions.

23:37– Huge moment for Rory

Big swerving putt on the 13th hole. Could have gone anywhere, but hits the back of the hole and drops. Huge par saver for McIlroy. He remains on -1 with six to play.

23:35 – Fitzpatrick continues his title push

Birdies on 14 and 15 for the Englishman. Brilliantly unflustered play. He joins Zalatoris in share of the lead on -4 with three holes remaining. Fine ball striking on a brutal day.

23:17 – Good Will hunting his first major

"67 today feels like a 61 or 62," said Zalatoris. "It is perhaps the best round I have played ever.

"I feel really good about my game. This is a beast of a golf course. The job is not even close to being done yet."

23:05 – Rahm and Fitzpatrick lead European challenge

A lot have been coming and going, but these two players have every chance of joining Zalatoris in the lead. They share 2nd place at the moment.

22:57 – Zalatoris with par at 18

A brilliant round of 67 from Will Zalatoris. Gets up and down from the bunker. He finishes his day at -4 and is in the clubhouse looking down on the field. Fine play by the American major specialist and fair chance he might be out in the final group tomorrow.

22:44 – Zalatoris leads US Open

Scheffler sees another shot go on the 12th hole. Three gone in two holes. Zalatoris with a birdie attempt on 17, but just fails to convert. He remains at -4, 1 shot clear of the field with one hole to play.

22:30 – Scheffler runs up brutal double on 11

Only 141 yards, but the par-3 11th hole is proving a real thorn in the side. Scottie misses the green with his tee shot and can't nudge it on with his second. The third jumps away from the Masters champion. Could be looking at two shots going here.

And indeed, two will disappear despite a solid attempt with his bogey attempt. Scheffler and Zalatoris share the lead on -4 as the carnage continues.

22:17 – Morikawa suffers double bogey

They all seem to be collapsing at the moment. Only 9 men under par now. The Open champion has run up a horrific double bogey 6 on the 7th to drop two strokes and fall back to -2. All going on out there.

22:10 – Rahm hits birdie train

So, so tough for the field, but Rahm finally gets one back against the head with the birdie on 7. McIlroy can't do likewise on the 8th with a perfect pitch to five feet. The putter has gone cold for the 2011 US Open champion at the moment. Rahm at -4, Rory still on -1.

22:00 – McIlroy misses another chance

Rory with a pushed putt for birdie on 7. Just a stabbed effort through the break and that stays up. McIlroy remains at -1. Tough old day for everybody on the course at the moment.

21:50 – Morikawa hits back

Such a classy player. Refused to press the panic button during his struggles on 4, but slots a lovely birdie on 5 to get himself back to -5 and level par for the day. 1 stroke behind Scottie at the top.

21:41 – Scheffler with magical eagle on 8

Well, there you go. The world No 1 and Masters champion spins his third shot onto the green at the par-5 8th and back into the hole for a stunning eagle. He moves to -6 and a two-shot lead at Brookline. Magnificent stuff and that is applying real pressure to the chasing pack.

21:35 – Morikawa bogey brilliance

The 4th hole is hugely demanding. Morikawa struggled badly to get his ball over 20 feet from the pin in four, but slots a wonderful putt for five to shed only the single stroke. Stunning recovery. Back to -4.

21:26 – Rahm with par save at 4

Excellent from big JR to remain at -3 and well in the hunt. Tough shot from rough, but gets it to 8 feet and slots the putt for par. Good work from the Spanish player.

21:22 – Chances come and go

Both Morikawa and McIlroy with birdie putts from shortish range, but neither player can cash in. Morikawa sees putt fade away on 3 with McIlroy missing on 4. Frustrating, but far from defining.

21:14 – McIlroy with chance of birdie on 4

Two dropped shots for Rory on 2 and 3, but he plays a majestic shot on the 4th hole. 9-iron to six feet or so and this is a golden chance to recover to -3. Vital he halts the slide.

21:07 – Morikawa pars 2nd hole

McIlroy and Rahm both dropping shots on the long par-3 second, but no such issue for the Open champion as he slides home his par putt from seven feet. Morikawa leads the field by one.

20:45 – Rory drops shot at 2nd hole

This is the type of day it is going to be. McIlroy doing little wrong, but just can't hold the green and then takes three more shots from the thicker grass. Ball almost dived in, but just stuck on edge of hole. Back to -3.

20:36 – Safe par for McIlroy

Just nudges the ball confidently out of the thick stuff from behind the green. Two feet away and that will do just nicely for the Northern Irishman. Big Jon Rahm thumps a fairway wood off the tee at the first and is right down the middle.

20:30 – Rory on the course

Conditions are going to have their say today. McIlroy with his second to the first from the rough. Wedge shot, but so difficult to hold the green in wind and he doesn't. Through the back. Testing chip and putt to start his day.

20:15 – Scheffler makes impressive start

One hole gone, one birdie for Scottie. Lovely play indeed down the first and he moves to -4, one off the pace. Such a great temperament. This wind is really starting to blow out there.

20:05 – Big boys ready to rumble

World No 1 and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is on the course for his 3rd round. McIlroy out at 20:23 with Rahm in the penultimate group at 20:34. Scheffler with his bunker shot at the first. Fairway bunker, but he scoops that ball up and lands it on the green. Nice shot.

19:45 – De Shambles

2020 champion Bryson DeChambeau is certainly getting moving on 'moving day'. Unfortunately for him, he is heading in the wrong direction at Brookline. Began the day with a birdie, but has slipped in dropped shots at 2, 3, 5 and 7 with a double bogey on 8. He is +7 after 12.

Is American Denny McCarthy, who is +1 for the tournament after a fine round of 68 today.

19:10 – Zalatoris on the move

Will Zalatoris knows his way around a major and the US Open. He finished in a tie for sixth at Winged Foot two years ago and has made a birdie to move to -2 for his week. Well in the hunt. Or Will in the hunt.

19:00 – Jordan Spieth slots a timely birdie

Never say never. A superb two on the 11th hole from mid-range and the 2015 champion is back to +2 for the event.

18:45 – Thomas Pieters with a birdie at 1st hole

The Belgian player is the latest figure to pick out a birdie 3 at the opening par-4 and he moves -1 for the tournament, 4 strokes off the lead.

18:31 – Is anybody making a run?

Only one player out on the course is under par so far for the tournament and he has only played the opening hole. Brandon Matthews with a birdie at the 1st hole to move to -1. Jordan Spieth reaches the turn at +1 for the day, +3 for the event which sounds a long way off, but who knows where he will end the day.

18:10 – Conditions bite back at Brookline

Front nine has par of 35 and a stroke average of 36.80 so far. Which suggests this is going to be a brutal test for the field. Winds, dry and hard greens is a recipe for high scoring. Which is a US Open speciality.

17:50 – DJ with an opening birdie

Start as you mean to go on. Dustin delivers a birdie on the first hole of the day to move to level par. 498 yards today, but Johnson shows his fabled length to get himself to within five strokes of the lead. Nice putt finds the cup from over 20 feet. Could be an epic Saturday in Boston.

17:33 – Welcome back to Brookline

Should be a fascinating third round. It is traditionally called 'moving day' but one suspects nobody will be moving very far today with wind up and the Boston course hardening. Hanging around near the top of the leaderboard might be a more realistic plan for this 3rd round.

Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson are out among the earlier starters and get the chance to apply some pressure to the leaders, who are not out for another three hours.

Morikawa feeling 'great' to lead US Open

Open champion Collin Morikawa added a 66 to his opening 69 to lead on -5.

"Yesterday felt great and today I was going to do the same exact thing," he said on Sky Sports.

"Today was a continuation of all the prep I've been doing over the past week.

"The putter has been feeling really good. The game has been coming together from tee to green."

Rahm 'satisfied' with his second round at US Open as he sits behind Morikawa

Second round recap

Defending champion Jon Rahm is in an excellent spot heading into the weekend after posting a round 67 on Friday to move him within one shot of Morikawa. He made the first eagle of his US Open career on the 14th.

Rory McIlroy kept his US Open challenge on track on day two, as Collin Morikawa surged to the top of the leaderboard at the Country Club in Brookline.

McIlroy was comfortably the best player on day one, with a bogey on 18 being the only blemish on his card.

He was well placed heading into the second round, but did not have his best game and once again his putting was an important factor in him posting a red number on Friday.

At 25, Morikawa has earned a reputation as a big-tournament player and he produced some of the best golf on day two to propel himself to the top of the leaderboard. Five birdies and a bogey featured in his round of 66 to climb to five-under.

There's plenty of drama swirling the Major as players who have joined the rebel Saudi-backed league are still being allowed to compete.

Those players have already been handed suspensions from the PGA Tour for their decision.
