Ridden by Frankie Dettori, Wissahickon parted company with his jockey in the paddock before the race but then went out to win with some style from Mordin in second and Via Via in third.
Having won three of his previous four starts this season, Wissahickon settled well towards the rear of a group that raced on the far side of the track. Dettori angled his mount towards the centre of the course with a couple of furlongs to run, and he quickly made his way through the field, taking the lead from Via Via as they passed the final furlong marker.
From there the result was never in doubt, with Dettori only having to push Wissahickon out to the line which he did in striding on to win by a handsome three-and-three-quarter lengths margin. Mordin in second denying Via Via in third the runners-up slot by half a length.
Victory for Dettori was the jockey’s second win in the race after the success of Halling – also trained by Gosden – in 1994, and came a day after the 22nd anniversary of the 47-year-old’s historic seven winners at Ascot.
Kenya was the race favourite to provide trainer Aidan O’Brien with what would have been a big-race four-timer on the day, but after racing prominently the former Cambridgeshire winner finished well-beaten and last of the 33 runners.
However O’Brien and son Donnacha completed a big-race treble in the first three contests on Saturday.
It started when Mohawk ran out the winner of the day’s opener, Royal Lodge Stakes, to giving O’Brien a 1-2-3.
Mohawk was always travelling smoothly and picked up nicely for Donnacha O’Brien in the closing stages to land the Group 2 contest by a length and a quarter ahead of Sydney Opera House and Cape Of Good Hope. The John Gosden-trained favourite Beatboxer ran visibly below par to finish last.
Next up the O’Brien-trained Fairyland denied The Mackem Bullet for a second time this season in a thrilling climax to the Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes.
The winner looked to be travelling much the better entering the final furlong but The Mackem Bullet refused to go down without a fight, to such an extent there was just a neck between them at the line.
The Ballydoyle team then secured a big-race treble thanks to Ten Sovereigns who maintained his unbeaten record with victory in the Group 1Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes.
Ten Sovereigns only made his racecourse debut just over a month ago and since then the colt has notched three victories, this latest one a half-length defeat of Jash again with Donnacha O’Brien in the saddle.
