Panarin raced up the left wing, worked his way past Dmitry Orlov and flicked a
quick wrist shot past goalie Philipp Grubauer just under the crossbar for the
game-winning goal. Ian Cole and Pierre-Luc Dubois got assists on the winning
play.
Panarin finished with one goal and two assists, and Thomas Vanek added one
goal and one assist.
For Washington, Evgeny Kuznetsov scored power-play goals just 29 seconds apart
late in the first period, and John Carlson finished with three assists while
Nicklas Backstrom added two. Game 2 is set for Sunday.
Lightning 5, Devils 2
Ondrej Palat recorded a goal and two assists as top-seeded Tampa Bay beat
visiting New Jersey in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal.
Palat notched his second career postseason game with three points and first
since Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals against the New York Rangers in
2015.
He scored Tampa Bay's first goal and then recorded the primary assist on
tallies by Tyler Johnson and rookie Yanni Gourde. Alex Killorn scored the
fourth goal and Nikita Kucherov added an empty-netter. Andrei Vasilevskiy made
29 saves. Game 2 is Saturday afternoon in Tampa Bay.
Bruins 5, Maple Leafs 1
David Backes and David Pastrnak scored second-period goals to break a 1-all
tie and spark Boston to a rout of visiting Toronto in Game 1 of their Eastern
Conference quarterfinal.
Brad Marchand, Sean Kuraly and David Krejci also scored, and Tuukka Rask made
26 saves. Game 2 of the series takes place Saturday night in Boston.
Zach Hyman had the Maple Leafs' only goal and Frederik Andersen had 35 saves.
Toronto's Nazem Kadri was sent off with a game misconduct and match penalty
with 11:42 remaining in the third after slamming the head of Boston's Tommy
Wingels into the boards while he was already down on the ice. Wingels left the
game and did not return.
Predators 5, Avalanche 2
Filip Forsberg scored two third-period goals as host Nashville dumped Colorado
to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven Western Conference first-round
series.
Forsberg, who has 13 goals and 11 assists in 20 regular-season matches against
Colorado, snapped a 2-2 tie at 6:08 of the third period by deflecting Roman
Josi's point blast past a helpless Jonathan Bernier. He then doubled the lead
at 12:10 with an unassisted marker.
Colton Sissons sealed the outcome with an empty-netter at 18:03 as the
Predators notched their 11th straight win over the Avalanche, dating to April
2016. Game 2 of the series is Saturday in Nashville.
