NHL roundup: Panthers earn emotional win over Caps

Maxim Mamin and Nick Bjugstad also scored for the Panthers. Maxim's goal was
the first of his career, and it came in his eighth NHL game after he had been
a healthy scratch the past four games. Bjugstad's goal tied the score with
just 3:42 left in the third period.

Roberto Luongo, who fought back tears as he spoke to the crowd before the
game, made 33 saves to earn the win.

This was the Panthers' first home game since last week's deadly shooting at
nearby Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. Luongo, a
resident of Parkland, spoke to the crowd about his admiration for the
students, who have loudly pushed for change after yet another school shooting.

Predators 7, Sharks 1

Goaltender Pekka Rinne posted his 300th NHL career win as Nashville thumped
visiting San Jose.

Rinne, 35, had a relatively easy time reaching the milestone, stopping 33 of
34 shots as the host Predators were on top throughout. Nashville held leads of
2-0 after the first period and 3-1 after the second before adding four more
goals in the third.

Nick Bonino scored a goal and assisted on the winner. Viktor Arvidsson, Ryan
Johansen and Calle Jarnkrok also tallied a goal and an assist apiece for the
Predators, who posted their third straight win. Logan Couture scored the lone
goal for the Sharks, who saw their win streak end at three games.

Sabres 3, Red Wings 2 (OT)

Marco Scandella scored with two-tenths of a second remaining in overtime,
giving Buffalo a victory at Detroit.

The game seemed headed for a shootout before Johan Larsson skated toward the
Detroit net and passed it back to Scandella, who fired the puck from the left
circle past Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard.

Rasmus Ristolainen and Evander Kane had the regulation goals for the Sabres,
who snapped a three-game losing streak. Jonathan Ericsson and Justin
Abdelkader scored for the Red Wings, who have lost three straight by identical
3-2 scores.

Oilers 3, Avalanche 2 (OT)

Connor McDavid scored with 2:41 remaining in overtime to lift Edmonton to a
victory over visiting Colorado.

McDavid scored his 27th goal and 12th in the last 15 games by finishing a
tremendous sequence with Leon Draisaitl.

Both McDavid and Draisaitl wound up with a goal and an assist, and Zack
Kassian scored for Edmonton. Samuel Girard and Colin Wilson netted the
Avalanche's goals.

Flyers 2, Blue Jackets 1

Claude Giroux and Nolan Patrick scored third-period goals as Philadelphia
rallied for a victory over visiting Columbus.

Shayne Gostisbehere had a pair of assists for the Flyers, who are 8-0-2 over
their past 10 games. Giroux also assisted on Patrick's tiebreaking goal.
Goalie Petr Mrazek made his debut for the Flyers after being acquired in a
trade Monday night from the Detroit Red Wings, and he stopped 19 shots for the
win.

Artemi Panarin scored for the Blue Jackets, who couldn't hold a one-goal lead.
Sergei Bobrovsky, a former Flyers goaltender, made 18 saves in the losing
effort.

Wild 4, Devils 2

Alex Stalock recorded 38 saves to make a second-period flurry stand up for
visiting Minnesota, which rallied for a victory over New Jersey.

Chris Stewart capped Minnesota's second straight three-goal second period.
Joel Eriksson-Ek and Mike Reilly also scored as the Wild tallied three times
in a span of 5:36 after getting three goals in a span of 4:12 on Monday in a
5-3 win over the New York Islanders.

The Wild's Eric Staal added an empty-net goal and recorded his 900th career
point, becoming the ninth active player to reach the milestone. Taylor Hall
and Stefan Noesen collected the Devils' goals.

Canadiens 3, Rangers 1

Tomas Plekanec, Jeff Petry and Phillip Danault each scored a goal as Montreal
snapped a six-game losing streak with a victory over visiting New York.

The Canadiens had gone 0-4-2 during their recent skid but this game proved
different. Antti Niemi made 31 saves for the win.

New York dropped its fifth consecutive game, losing the NHL debut of goalie
Alexandar Georgiev. He made 38 saves.

Maple Leafs 4, Islanders 3 (SO)

Tyler Bozak scored the only goal of the shootout as host Toronto overcame a
two-goal deficit to edge New York.

Mitch Marner, Morgan Rielly and Auston Matthews also scored for the Maple
Leafs, who have won three straight and eight of their last nine. Frederik
Andersen recorded 32 saves in regulation and overtime before stopping all
three shots he faced in the shootout.

Ryan Pulock, Mathew Barzal and Jordan Eberle scored for the Islanders, who
lost their second straight. Goalie Jaroslav Halak made 28 saves.

Lightning 4, Senators 3

Tyler Johnson, Victor Hedman, Vladislav Namestnikov and Brayden Point scored
as Tampa Bay continued its road dominance with a win at Ottawa.

Nikita Kucherov and Yanni Gourde each had two assists for the Lightning, and
Namestnikov also had a two-point game.

Ryan Dzingel, Mark Borowiecki and Derick Brassard scored for the Senators, who
were playing the second of back-to-back contests. Mark Stone had two helpers,
and Brassard added an assist.

Flames 5, Coyotes 2

Johnny Gaudreau scored a goal and added two assists as Calgary shrugged off an
Arizona goal less than a minute into the game and posted a road win.

Sean Monahan and Sam Bennett each contributed a goal and an assist for
Calgary, while Jon Gillies made 35 saves for his second career NHL win in his
first start of the season.

Arizona, which owns the fewest points in the NHL with 44, had a season-high
four-game winning streak snapped.

Stars 2, Kings 0

Tyler Seguin and Alexander Radulov scored in the final nine minutes, and Kari
Lehtonen stopped 18 shots for his first shutout of the season as visiting
Dallas defeated Los Angeles.

The Stars had lost their previous two contests by a combined score of 7-2, but
they salvaged a lone victory on their three-game California road trip.

Lehtonen earned his sixth straight win in games he has started and recorded
the 38th shutout of his 14-year NHL career.
