Eggert and Benecken storm to World Championship gold
Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken held off Olympic champions Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt to claim World Championship gold in the luge sprint doubles.
The leading German pair qualified fastest in the morning and then delivered in the afternoon on home ice, clocking 30.812s in Winterberg.
Wendl and Arlt were just 0.012s behind their compatriots while Austria’s Thomas Steu and Lorenz Koller took bronze – a further 0.05s off the pace.
The three medallists were in a class of their own, with Latvia’s Andris and Juris Sics almost half a tenth further back in fourth ahead of Chris Mazdzer and Jayson Terdiman from the USA.
