Pavlichenko secures overall World Cup title after Sochi sprint win

Semen Pavlichenko secured overall luge World Cup victory after taking victory in the sprint in Sochi before helping the host nation hold off Germany to win the team relay in the last luge race of the winter.

He was part of an all-Russian podium as he finished 0.018 seconds ahead of teammate Roman Repilov in a time of 35.566 seconds.

The duo completed also completed a one-two in the overall standings as Pavlichenko's 788 points beat Repilov's 718 points.

Maksim Aravin secured the final podium spot in Sochi, while Germany's Felix Lock came third in the overall standings with 685 points after coming fourth in the sprint event.

The home course proved a happy hunting ground with Russians also topping the podium in the women's and doubles sprints before claiming victory in the team relay ahead of Germany.

Viktoriia Demchenko crossed first in 31.505 seconds while duo Aleksandr Denisev and Vladisav Antonov were victorious in 31.45 seconds in the doubles.

Germany finished the World Cup luge season with 57 medals, with Russia the next best after racking up 26, while Austria finished with 19.
