Stoner goes quicker still with a 1:29.695! He's still improving and perhaps he can indeed do a 28, as he said he could yesterday!

And it's going to have to be some time to topple Stoner off provisional pole position for tomorrow's race.

So, with just over 20 minutes remaining, it's Stoner top of the shop, followed by Lorenzo, Pedrosa, Dovizioso, Bradl, Bautista, Crutchlow, De Puniet, Rossi and completing the top 10 Nicky Hayden.

Cal Crutchlow, who will celebrate his 27th birthday the day after the Australian Grand Prix, is in seventh at the moment, 1.790 seconds off the pace.

Lorenzo is on his way round looking to depose Stoner from the top, but he's not quite there and has to settle for P2.

Ivan Silva has also recovered from his crash and he's back on a new bike too. Good news.

Wow! Stoner absolutely flies around and posts a time of 1:29.892! That may well be good enough to seal pole position! To think that about 10 minutes ago, he was flying through the air. Fantastic determination from the Aussie!

Bradl displaces Lorenzo from fourth spot with a quick lap!

Let's see how Casey does now. He clocks a lap of 1:30.802 - not his best today, but at least he looks okay.

No changes at the top of the timesheets for the moment as Stoner jumps back on a new bike and heads back out.

Stoner actually did well to adjust his body in midair in order to avoid landing on his bad ankle. Skilfully done by the five-times Aussie GP winner.

So, Stoner heads back into the garage to pick up a spare bike and we should see him again this session.

Stoner's off too! Oooh, he's a lucky boy after he comes off and lands on his other (non damaged) ankle! He also narrowly avoids the bike as it bounces after him! He gets up straight away and gives a thumbs up, alleviating the all-too apparent tension on the faces of his supporters!

Oh dear, Silva is off his bike, lying prone in the grass. Replays show him flipping off before landing heavily on his bike. He gets a bump from the bike for good measure, but at least he gets up and is able to walk off the track before slumping to the ground.

Lorenzo and Pedrosa have finished first and second on 22 occasions. On 12 of these occasions Pedrosa has won the race; Lorenzo has come out on top 10 times. Currently it's Pedrosa occupying P2 with Lorenzo back in fourth place.

There's no doubt that Stoner loves it here at Phillip Island but, given the injury he's carrying, his performances so far this weekend have been nothing short of remarkable.

There could be some weather rolling in, but for the time being it's still dry out on track. Stoner heads back out.

Stoner is also back in the garage now, expression impossible to read under his helmet.

This will be the 24th Australian Grand Prix, which has been held every year since the first visit in 1989. The first two Aussie GPs were held at Phillip Island, before visiting the Eastern Creek circuit for six successive years and then returning to Phillip Island in 1997 where it has since remained.

Phillip Island is such a fascinating place to race, given its location and wild weather. There's never a dull moment at the Aussie GP!

Lorenzo hads back into the garage for the time being, still in fourth place. The Spaniard is ahead of De Puniet in fifth and then Bradl, Bautista, Crutchlow, Espargaro and Rossi.

Lorenzo is bumped down another place as Andrea Dovizioso moves into P3.

Dani Pedrosa puts in a quick lap to displace Lorenzo in P2, 1.090s behind pacesetter Stoner.

Stoner has recorded four poles so far this season and he's already on track to make it five as he sets the early benchmark with a time of 1:30518!

So much has been written and said of Stoner this weekend, but let's not forget that Jorge Lorenzo arrived in Australia with a 23-point advantage at the head of the MotoGP championship standings and he can clinch the title here.

Here we go! The bikes head out onto track and with the weather so unpredictable, we can expect most teams to get times in early on in the session.

He then continued his masterclass with another empathic showing in second practice.

Stoner began his bid for a sixth straight home MotoGP victory in ominous fashion by blitzing the field in first practice.
