Ben Spies (Yamaha) and Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda) join him on the front row. Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha), Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) and Hector Barbera (Ducati Pramac) will start on the second row.

-

He tells the BBC: "I never thought I could get pole so early! I'm looking forward to the race!"

0'

Bautista has pole at Silverstone!

0'

Lorenzo's challenge ends with him in fourth behind Bautista, Spies and Stoner.

1'

The rain flag still out - Lorenzo and Stoner still trying...

3'

Stoner and Lorenzo still out, looking for a jump into the top two.

6'

Bautista relaxed in the garage. You can see the water spattering the camera lens. Looking good for him - most of the bikes are back in, with the riders unwilling to risk a crash and unlikely to better their times.

8'

The rain flag is out! Does this mean Bautista will take pole?

9'

Spies has a minor off but arcs his bike back on to the track. He had a wobble after touching the paint on the kerb and had to go straight on at the following corner.

10'

He is also able to jog away after some initial help - and his Ducati factory bike is also smashed up. Perhaps not quite as badly as Rossi's.

11'

HAYDEN DOWN AT THE SAME PLACE AS ROSSI! I thought I was watching a replay! Almost a carbon copy!

12'

Spies and Stoner back out. Can Bautista hold on to that provisional pole?

13'

Lorenzo runs wide on to the grass but rejoins without any trouble.

16'

The top 10 heading into the final quarter of an hour: 1.Bautista 2.Spies 3.Stoner 4.Lorenzo 5.Pedrosa 6.Barbera 7.Hayden 8.Dovizioso 9.Bradl 10.Rossi

18'

Bautista's team wheel the San Carlo Honda Gresini into the garage. Let's see how long that P1 time lasts.

19'

Bautista pulls it out to go P1 with 2:03.303! /// Fireblade_929: "Casey came into Vale corner with the front wheel crossways & ripped through, VR was wheels in line & the Ducati dumped him."

21'

All the top eight except for Lorenzo are out on track under grey skies.

22'

Watch MotoGP qualifying on British Eurosport 2 from 7.30-9.00pm this evening. Our race day coverage is normal, live Moto2/3 and delayed MotoGP.

23'

Aussie Stoner does just that with a 2:03.423 to jump from eighth to second.

24'

Silverstone is a long lap and it takes a lot of concentration to put in a solid time.

25'

Hayden jumps to fifth with a 2:04.162.

25'

As MCN's @birtymotogp points out: "Ironic that the corner where Rossi crashed is called Vale"

26'

Ellison on the Paul Bird bike stays 16th with a 2:08.

28'

Pedrosa is back in the pits, as is Stoner and Spies. Lorenzo and fourth-placed Barbera still out.

29'

Rossi back out on another chassis. It takes a lot to keep that man down. He slid a long way on that rump - I bet it's pretty sore despite the leathers...

30'

Spies goes top with 2:03.409!

31'

I was wondering whose bike was being wheeled back into the garage there - it turns out it was Rossi's! All the casing has been smashed off it, not red at all!

32'

Lorenzo is looking for a 50th MotoGP podium this weekend. He dominated proceedings at Silverstone in 2010 with pole position, race win and fastest lap - but crashed out of the race last year on lap nine at Abbey.

33'

Dani's first timed lap of the run-out is some way off the benchmark, 0.6s.

35'

Pedrosa and Stoner are back out - and ready to battle Lorenzo for the top spot.

36'

Blusens Avintia's Maverick Viñales snatched pole ahead of Efrén Vázquez and Alexis Masbou for the Moto3 race. The high winds made life difficult for the lighter bikes.

38'

The top 10 at present: 1.Lorenzo 2.Pedrosa 3.Barbera 4.Spies 5.Dovizioso 6.Bautista 7.Stoner 8.Hayden 9.Bradl 10.Rossi

42'

Valentino’s father Graziano crashed at Club corner on the final lap of the 250cc GP at Silverstone.

44'

Rossi had his foot almost on the floor as he readied himself for a left turn and the bike just flopped over. He didn't seem to hit an oil slick or anything - just lost his balance.

45'

Meanwhile Pedrosa has gone second with 2:03.835.

46'

He loses the bike and slides a long way down the tarmac then into the gravel. The Ducati is ruined but he is able to get up with the help of a steward and walk away from it.

46'

ROSSI WITH A MASSIVE CRASH!

48'

Lorenzo is now heading the session in front of Barbera and Pedrosa.

50'

Spies just had an early off-track excursion at the final chicane, off the track and in the gravel.

52'

Stoner with an early 2:04.385 but now Lorenzo tops the charts with 2:03.763.

54'

But Stefan Bradl, the only MotoGP rookie on a manufacturer bike, is on track after he crashed this morning as well.

58'

Remember Karel Abraham is also not taking part due to left hand injuries sustained in testing at Aragon.

60'

Here we go!

13:50

Cal Crutchlow has been diagnosed with a sprained left ankle following his heavy morning fall at Silverstone and will not take part in qualifying. As well as hurting his ankle, the Englishman received an all-round battering when he lowsided through the fast left-hander onto the Hangar Straight in cold and windy conditions.

13:45

Australian MotoGP world champion Casey Stoner looks a good bet for pole position in qualifying after lapping fastest in practice.
