Frenzel finished with a combined time of 25:10.9 to not only take the win but also snatch the yellow bib from Johannes Rydzek who could only finish 19.2 seconds back in second.
He now leads Rydzek by 14 points in the overall World Cup standings with two races left.
With Trondheim experiencing heavy wind and snow showers, the ski jumping round had to be cancelled with the provisional competition round results used instead – Austrian Mario Seidl heading the list.
Frenzel ranked third while Rydzek was 11th, a time disadvantage of one minute and 23 seconds on Seidl.
The latter soon had company on the skies though with Frenzel and Manuel Faisst catching him on the second of five laps while Rydzek was in the pursuing group.
Frenzel was eventually able to shake off Faisst and Seidl to take the win but Rydzek battled hard to finish in second with fellow German Fabian Riessle third.
