Bjoergen's compatriot Astrid Jacobsen won the bronze medal, 55.5 seconds behind the winner.
Kalla powered her way around the course and crossed the finish line in first place, but six-time Olympic champion Bjoergen set a punishing pace out on the course and her split times left the Swede in no doubt as to who was going to win.
The gold medal was the 36-year-old's 16th of her career at the world championships and her second in Lahti, following her victory in the skiathlon event on Saturday. (Reporting by Philip O'Connor in Stockholm; Editing by Alison Williams)
