Djokovic won a first set marked by sumptuous tennis, but Nadal hit back in the second to level matters.

The third set was a more fraught affair that was decided by a tie-break. Both players had multiple break opportunities, but 12th seed Djokovic sealed the set after another exacting rally to take a one-set advantage into Saturday.
