India’s Olympic medal duck was broken by Sakshi Malik in the 58kg women's wrestling after the 23-year-old won bronze.
Malik has become just the fourth Indian woman to win an Olympic medal, and her efforts have captured the hearts of many within India and across the world.
Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and former international Virender Sehwag led the tributes for Malik on Twitter.
The Prime Minister of India also took to social media to congratulate Malik.
And her mother’s reaction is a clear indication of the immense pride felt within the nation after her success.
Malik said the medal is the “result of 12 years of dedication”.
"I never thought I would become the first woman wrestler from India to bag an Olympic medal in wrestling," Malik told The Hindu newspaper. "I hope the remaining wrestlers will also do well."
"I never gave up to the end. In the last round, I had to give my maximum, I had the self belief," she said.
