WHAT IS THE MARATHON WORLD RECORD TIME? Kipchoge is aiming to defend his Olympic title in the men's 26.2 mile race but can he clock a new personal best in such difficult conditions?

WHAT ELSE IS ON THE AGENDA?
It’s all about the track cycling from 02.00 BST. GB’s athletes are still in the hunt for medals and none more so than Laura Kenny who will be targeting a SIXTH Olympic gold in the women’s Omnium which is the first of the action to get underway at Izu Velodrome. That will feature throughout the schedule (scratch race, tempo race, elimination race) with the final points race at 04.25.
Her other half, Jason is also aiming for a place on the podium in the men’s Keirin. He’s in Heat 1 of the quarter finals at 02.24 BST. Jack Carlin follows him in Heat 2. The GB duo will both hope to go for more medals in the final of the event at 04.00 BST.
There are still four boxing finals to go and we’ve got some big British interest in one of them. Lauren Price will bid for the title in the women’s middleweight gold-medal bout against China’s Li Qian from 06.45 BST
Elsewhere, there are gold medal matches in the women’s basketball at 03.30 (USA v Japan) and in the volleyball (Brazil v USA) at 05.30 BST.

MORE BOW OUT. We are up to 25 competitors who have now withdrawn, including Kenya's Amos Kipruto.
Meanwhile, GB's Thompson sits 65th with Connor 76th.

A CERT FOR THE PODIUM? While others struggle, Kipchoge continues to shine.
00.48
HAWKINS OUT! A blow for GB as Callum Hawkins, who finished ninth in Rio, has pulled out and will have DNF (did not finish) next to his name when the race concludes.
Two of the early pace-setters have also officially withdrawn. Do Nascimento and Mokoka are out.
There were concerns over the hot, humid conditions in Japan and it's certainly proving tough for a large number of the athletes competing.
00.43
MIND THE GAP. Kipchoge has opened a significant advantage over the rest of the front pack. It's a good 7-10 second lead.
00.40
A DATE WITH DESTINY? Kipchoge has his eyes set on becoming just the third man to defend his Olympic marathon title after clinching gold at Rio 2016.
The only two to ever achieve the feat are Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia (1960 and 1964) and East German Waldemar Cierpinski (1976 and 1980).

KENYAN FRONT THREE. Kipchoge continues to set the pace with a time of 1:32:31 at 30k. He's joined by his compatriots Lawrence Cherono and Amos Kipruto.
00.30
GB TRIO OUT OF THE TOP 40. At the 30k mark Hawkins is down to 46 with a time of 1:18:39. Thompson is up to 77 with Connor 81st.
00.27
KIPCHOGE TAKES CHARGE. The Rio champion looks to step it up at the 25km mark and create a leaner leading pack. He notches up a time of 1:17:24.

WHAT HAPPENED THERE? Do Nascimento, who was neck and neck with Kipchoge moments ago, is motoring along nicely but suddenly looks very weary. He touches his head, moves towards the side and falls to the floor. He takes a seat on the road and appears shattered but as a camera zooms in, he jumps to his feet and charges off.
A minute later he's doing it again, but this time he stays seated. A medic comes across and looks to attend to him. Hopefully he is okay but his aim of staying near the front in this marathon appear over.

OPINION: Only half a day's competition remains of Tokyo 2020 and this much is clear, writes Eurosport columnist, Paul Hayward: the delayed Summer Games have been a triumph for Team GB.
00.15
BRIT WATCH: GB’s Ben Connor was down in 83rd at the halfway point just one place ahead of Chris Thompson. Callum Hawkins was closer to the front in 39th spot.
00.10
MEN’S MARATHON. The action is already underway in Tokyo as Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge tries to defend his Olympic marathon title. The 36-year-old is firmly in the mix in joint-second place with Brazil’s Daniel Do Nascimento at the halfway point in Sapporo. South Africa’s Stephen Mokoka just about leads with a time of 1:05.13 but it's fairly packed up there at present.

WELCOME! Can you believe it? We are already at Day 16 of Tokyo 2020 and the Games are almost over. Yes, we are now down to the final straight but the key word there is… ‘almost’. They are ‘almost’ over.
Fortunately for us, it’s not time for that closing ceremony just yet. We’ve still got some high calibre action to enjoy with 13 medal events to go. So, let’s crack on and get amongst it!
