Sophie Wells admitted the big occasion overwhelmed her as she settled for dressage silver at the Paralympics.
Wells, in her Paralympic debut and riding horse Pinocchio, had had high hopes after winning triple gold at last year's European Championships and double gold at the 2010 World Championships in Kentucky.
But a brilliant score by Belgium's Michele George, just moments before she entered the arena, had her spooked.
"I usually block out the commentary as I'm going into the ring but I heard what a good score Michele had got and it threw me a bit," she said.
"It was very difficult to block that out during the test. It wasn't the best preparation because I knew how tough it was going to be to beat.
"Michele is a great rider and has a great horse and I knew then that I'd have to be at my best and do the best test I'd ever done in order to beat her.
"We made a mistake in a simple movement, when he trotted instead of walking, and you can't make up for things like that.
"It was uncharacteristic and there's no excuse. I take responsibility and we'll go and work on it for the future."
