Salford's Justin Carney: Points deduction gives us more determination

The Red Devils were on course for their best Super League finish for 10 years but on Monday were plunged into 11th place in the table after being docked six points for breaking the salary cap.

While Salford owner Marwan Koukash finalises an appeal, Ian Watson's men have the chance to win back two of the points when they entertain bottom-four bed fellows Hull KR at the AJ Bell Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

"Nothing really changes for us," said Carney, who this week completed a permanent move from Castleford.

"We still want to win every game, like we did before, we've just got more incentive to do so. I can't speak for everyone else but it has personally for me.

"Mentality, it's a blow on the board but nothing changes really because we've got to win every game now to climb back up. "

Head coach Ian Watson admits news of the points penalty came as a body blow and says it has added to the importance of Saturday's game.

"It was devastating news to be fair, we didn't see that coming," Watson said.

"It's something that's out of our control. Marwan and the club are dealing with it and we're leaving them to do that. Which way they go is up to them, we've got to focus on the rugby side and our focus is on Hull KR.

"It's a challenge. It's obviously made the job a little bit harder with the points going. But we know where we want to go and what we want to achieve as a team. We've had that focus from day one and for us we've said nothing changes.

"We've still got to do our job of winning games which we had to do any way regardless of what happened with the points and that's where we are challenging all our energy.

"It makes Saturday a big game, like all of them. It's going to be a big game every week now because of the position we're in and we're looking forward to that challenge.

"The players have all pulled together really well. They're all of the same opinion. They can't do anything about what's going on so leave the club to deal with that. They don't want to get side-tracked."

Salford will be looking to atone for a 44-30 defeat at Hull KR, who despite crashing out of the Challenge Cup in humiliating fashion at the hands of part-timers Oldham, have won two of their last three league games.

"We look at them at their best," Watson said. "It's important now we're halfway through the season that we learn from previous encounters we've had with teams, see where they broke us down and what they did really well to combat our style of play.

"We've got to learn from that earlier game and rectify the performance we put out that day, especially with the way we defended."

Hull KR coach James Webster is set to field the team that won at Castleford while Salford hav e skipper Tommy Lee back after missing the last five games with a knee injury.
