How Twitter saw Japan stun South Africa at the World Cup

Here, Press Association Sport looks at some of the reaction on social media after the Japanese claimed their first World Cup victory since 1991.

The result caught the imagination of plenty of Scots, who face Japan in Group B in Gloucester on Wednesday.

First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon said: "So, now we have to overcome South Africa AND the team that just beat South Africa. Easy!! Come on @Scotlandteam #RWC2015 #AsOne"

Harry Potter author JK Rowling, who lives north of the border, claimed she would have struggled to pen a script that saw Karne Hesketh run in an 84th-minute try: "#RSAvJPN #RugbyWorldCup You couldn't write this...."

Scotland's current number eight David Denton praised the victors, before jokingly adding: "Here's hoping the Japanese go and get melted tonight to celebrate"

Andy Nicol, a one-time Scotland captain, pointed out how far Japan have come by saying: " 20 years ago, Japan concede 145 points against NZ, today they beat South Africa. You could say that's progress!! #RugbyWorldCup"

England's 2003 hero Jonny Wilkinson, no stranger to late drama himself, was enraptured by the final few moments.

He wrote: "A brilliant performance by Japan, simple as that. My heart still racing after that last few minutes. World Cups are great & no one is safe."

One of Wilkinson's former team-mates Jason Robinson added: "Absolutely amazing performance from Japan!!!!"

Japan's coach Eddie Jones, who was in charge of Australia when they were defeated by England in the 2003 final, came in for plenty of praise for his gutsy approach to go for the try at the end.

Sir Clive Woodward, who led England to World Cup glory 12 years ago, wrote: "Wow - biggest calls in history of World Cup - Japan no kicks for goal / totally best game ever in World Cup history - Eddie Jones brilliant."

"Awesome result for Japan great game well done Eddie jones and his team the first big upset of the tournament. #ITSYOURCALL," added New Zealand great Jonah Lomu.

Those playing for other countries in the competition took notice of Japan's exploits too.

Welsh wing George North said: "Well there you go. That a World Cup for you! Fair play #RWC2015"

England's full-back Mike Brown simply wrote: "Wow!!! Japan"

And his international team-mate Richard Wigglesworth was also watching, writing: "What a performance! What a game. Decent World Cup so far"

Comedian Johnny Vegas could barely believe what he was watching: "Whaaaat? Thought my telly was broke but no, @JapanRugby just created a huge #RWC2015 shocker by beating the @Springboks What a finish!"

Former South Africa players shared in the shock, former number eight Pierre Spires admitting: "Absolutely Stunned. We got beaten by a better team today - Well done Japan."

Twenty-nine cap prop Cobus Visagie noted: "Luckily the Boks don't play often against Japan....."
