May aiming for another giant leap

Christian Wade and Marland Yarde set the bar high with their try-scoring exploits in England's 40-12 win against the Barbarians last weekend, while David Strettle is the most experienced wing on tour. But May has set himself the challenge of winning his first cap against Argentina and he is acutely aware that this weekend is his last chance to press those claims.

"Definitely," said the Gloucester wing. "The team performance was really good (against the Barbarians) and they have set down a standard and it is up to the boys that go out there this Sunday to raise it."

He added: "There are such quality players around the Premiership and it is an honour to be here on tour - but that is just stage one.

"It is important to go and get my first cap. That is what will define this tour as a success for me."

May is the fastest man in the England squad - quicker even than Wade - but as a teenage athlete he was a pole-vaulter and helped Ridgeway School win the national championships.

"It was crazy, thinking back. We just had a stick and we didn't even have a bed at our school, it was into a sand-pit," said May.

"I got up to three metres and 60 centimetres, which is quite high! There is a cross-over with rugby.

"I am very instinctive in the things I do. Maybe some people who stood at the end of the runway and thought about (jumping that high) wouldn't have got into it.

"I don't tend to think about things so much and just go and do it. That is how I am on the rugby field."
