Scotland ended their nine-game losing streak with a tenacious 36-20 win over Italy at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.
Captain Greg Laidlaw kicked 21 points with tries from John Barclay, John Hardie and a late Tommy Seymour try sealing the win from a lovely Stuart Hogg pass as Vern Cotter's side ended their worst run of Six Nations defeats in over 60 years.
Prior to this victory, Scotland last enjoyed a win in this tournament when Duncan Weir knocked over a drop goal in the final minute to earn the Scots a 21-20 success in Rome two years ago.
Under New Zealander Cotter, Scotland failed to win a match in last season’s Six Nations, but will be buoyed by this win before their final two matches against France at Murrayfield and Ireland in Dublin.
Flankers Barclay and Hardie both powered over the line in the early stages to give the visitors control of the match.
Italy struck back with a fine try by hooker Leonardo Ghiraldini following a charge from Gonzalo Garcia to cut the deficit to 17-10 at halftime.
Scotland fly-half Finn Russell was sent to the sin bin and Italy lock Marco Fuser barrelled over the line but scrumhalf Laidlaw continued to punish Italian indiscipline with his reliable boot and Seymour's late try sealed victory.
Scotland host France on March 13 before concluding their campaign on March 19 in Dublin, but this win probably ensures they will avoid the wooden spoon after condemning Italy to a third straight defeat.
