A Jonny Wilkinson-inspired Toulon thrashed basement-club Bourgoin 26-3 to maintain their charge at the head of the Top 14 table.

The England fly-half was in imperious form as he scored 18 points to send Toulon into second place and condemn the hapless Bourgoin to another defeat.

Wilkinson was ably assisted by a powerful pack and two expertly taking tries by centre Gabirieli Lovobalavu, in the first half after the video ref awarded the try, and from New Zealand wing Rudi Wulf in the second period when the game was all but won.

Toulon refuse to release Wilkinson

Toulon will have to wait and see what the rest of the weekend's results mean for the table.

But with both first-placed Racing Metro and third-placed Montpellier playing at home, tonight's win sets them up nicely for the second half of the season.
