Althaus, Juliane Seyfarth, Ramona Straub and Carina Vogt topped the tree in Zao with 838.6 points but didn't have things all their own way, despite streaking into a healthy lead early on.
They led the Austrian quartet of Jacqueline Seifriedsberger, Eva Pinkelnig, Chiara Hoelzl and Daniela Iraschko-Stolz by more than 40 points at the halfway stage.
However, their advantage was whittled down to just nine points with one jump to go before Althaus secured victory by getting the better of Iraschko-Stolz in the final jump.
"I'm very happy about our result. We have a great team and a great team spirit," said the 22-year-old.
"I'm happy that I could show such great jumps and I hope it will be similar tomorrow.
"The sun was shining and the wind was not that strong. It wasn’t easy but I think it was a fair competition."
Hosts Japan were third on the podium, with Germany (1948) a huge 704 points clear of Austria in the Nations Cup standings.
