Mark Williams, Judd Trump, John Higgins, Ding Junhui crash out of China Open

Mark Williams’ preparations for his world title defence were dealt a blow after he was eliminated in the China Open first round by Ken Doherty.

In a repeat of the 2003 final at the Crucible, Doherty made a marvellous 142 break en route to a 6-4 win in Beijing.
Williams joins a group of fancied seeds facing an early trip to Sheffield, with Judd Trump, John Higgins, Barry Hawkins and Ding Junhui also losing, while Mark Selby fell on Monday.
Trump lost a marathon deciding frame against Robbie Williams, Higgins failed to avenge his defeat at February’s Welsh Open to world number 84 Joe O’Connor, losing 6-2, and Lu Ning beat Hawkins 6-5.
Another big name took a tumble later on Tuesday, with Ding losing on home soil against James Wattana.
The World Championship starts on April 20.
