Jimmy White took a superb win over Peng Yisong to reach the last 16 of the German Masters and, in doing so, became the first player in their 60s since Eddie Charlton in 1992 to make this stage of a ranking tournament. It was a slow start from both players but White found form and went on to take an incredible victory. Stream the 2023 German Masters live and on-demand on discovery+ and Eurosport.

‘First 60 something to reach last 16 of a ranking event since 1992!’ – White beats Peng

Jimmy White became the first player in their 60s to reach the last 16 of a ranking event since 1992 courtesy of a 5-1 victory over Peng Yisong at the German Masters
The last player to do so was Eddie Charlton at the British Open in 1992 at the age of 62.
It was a slow start from White but he played his way into form during the match and will play Jack Lisowski on Thursday night, after the world No. 12 earlier whitewashed Zhang Anda.
“I’ve got my son working with me full time now,” said White.
"He is enthusiastic like me, so the table is brushed and ironed and I make sure I’m doing my two-to-four-hours of practice.
"I’m practising different parts of the game, including safety play. I didn’t previously do too much of that. I’m really enjoying playing and I’m really enjoying competing.”
Following some initial cagey play, White used his experience to get the better of Peng although he shook his head at the end of the frame, most likely due to how it went.
The second frame also went scrappy with the black going over the bottom right pocket and both players pushing reds dangerously towards the pocket.
White blinked first when he knocked a red into the black which gave Peng a great opportunity.
However, he ran out of position when trying to open up the reds, though had a lead of 30-5. Peng later made a 56 to make it one apiece.

Peng looked like he was going to go ahead in the match with one red left on the table in frame three, but made a big mistake when knocking the pink with the rest.
It didn’t prove costly at first, as White failed to take advantage with his next shot, but the Whirlwind won the safety battle and took the frame to go 2-1 up.
From then on, White stepped up his game and was looking more confident when in amongst the balls.
He potted a great long red to the yellow pocket and went on to make an 82, which was the highest break of the match.
The 60-year-old continued his great form after the mid-session interval with two big breaks of 63 and 50 to go one away from victory.
Peng failed to get out of a snooker behind the yellow and left White in. As he did in the previous two frames, he played some brilliant stuff and his break of 70 was enough to advance into the last 16.
Elsewhere, Kyren Wilson, who is one of just four top 16 players in Berlin after several of the sport's biggest names failed to qualify, beat Sam Craigie 5-2.
Craigie got back to 3-2 behind but Wilson showed his class in the final two frames to reach the next round, where he will play Jimmy Robertson.
Xiao Guodong won a decider against Fan Zhengyi in a tight match between the Chinese pair. He will face Elliot Slessor in the last 16.
