But Shaun Murphy, who lost 10-5 to O'Sullivan in Sunday's UK Championship final, is out after suffering a 4-3 defeat to Daniel Wells.
He made breaks of 68, 58 and 54, but was left perplexed as world number 63 Wells recovered from trailing 3-2 to complete a 4-3 success over the world number six.
O'Sullivan, who beat Michael Georgiou on his way to a record-equalling sixth UK Championship title, again had no problems in a straightforward 4-1 victory.
He raced into a 3-0 lead, before Georgiou hit back, winning the fourth frame with a score of 76-51.
However, O'Sullivan saved the best until last, with a break of 136 in the final frame.
