Snooker news - John Higgins whitewashes Yan Bingtao, Ding Junhui survives scare

Four-times world champion John Higgins whitewashed Yan Bingtao 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon to reach the last 16 of the Scottish Open at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.

Higgins, fresh off a magical 147 against Gerard Greene in the last round, opened up against rising star Bingtao with a break of 72.

The Scot then edged two slightly cagier frames to open up a three-frame advantage before a fantastic century break of 104 sealed a comprehensive victory.

Higgins will face Alfie Burden in the next round.

Elsewhere, former world champion Shaun Murphy knocked in a break of 141 on his way to a 4-2 victory over Nigel Bond and will face Kyren Wilson later on Wednesday after he came from 3-1 down to beat Joe Perry 4-3.

Ryan Day finished with aplomb against Zhang Anda as back-to-back tons helped him to a 4-2 win.

In the late game Ding Junhui survived a scare as he progressed past Zhao Xintong 4-3.

Zhao led 2-1 and 3-2 thanks to breaks of 68, 73 and 89 but in frame six he missed a crucial pot to seal the frame, allowing Ding to clean up.

And Ding took the deciding frame after another error from his young opponent in potting pink only to somehow knock a red in on the same shot.

Elsewhere, Judd Trump knocked in two tons as he demolished Zhang Jiankang 4-1 while Mark Allen beat Yuan Sijun by the same scoreline.
