Dott got off to a terrific start despite an early century from Carter and looked set to wrap up victory on Sunday.
However Carter had other ideas as he dragged himself level and then triumphed in a tense encounter that saw the pair exchanging frames.

Carter will now face Ronnie O’Sullivan in the second round.
World number nine Kyren Wilson was the fourth player to book his place in the last 16 as he comfortably dispatched Matthew Stevens 10-3.
Wilson led 7-2 coming into Sunday’s session and he wasted no time in wrapping things up.

He will face the winner of the match between Shaun Murphy and Jamie Jones.
Murphy knocked in the highest break of the tournament thus far with a 137 in the third.
That gave him a 2-1 lead and he extended it to 4-1 before Jones fought back and he made it 5-4 in their final frame of the day with a break of 114.
In the latest match on Sunday evening Marco Fu was knocked out 10-5 by 20-year-old Lyu Haotian.
The youngster, making his Crucible debut, led 4-3 after the opening seven frames in which both players made a ton.
However after that he took complete control as he won four frames in a row without Fu potting a ball, including a 127.
Fu fought back, making another ton, but his return to action following his eye issues did not go well as Haotian secured progression to the next round.
