Snooker news - Ali Carter books semi-final spot, Mark Selby sets up Judd Trump clash

Top seed Mark Allen was dumped out of the World Grand Prix on Thursday as he was beaten 4-1 by Ali Carter, who later booked his spot in the semi-finals.

Scottish Open champion Allen opened up with a break of 85 at Cheltenham but thereafter he was second best to The Captain.
Carter responded instantly with a break of 86 and then edged a narrow frame to go 2-1 ahead.
After winning the fourth frame Allen then conceded in the fifth - despite only trailing 2-24 - clearly frustrated by the way he was playing.
Allen later tweeted an apology to his fans who were watching the match.
"Bad day at the office. Sorry to anyone who had to watch that. "Best of luck to @TheCaptain147 for the rest of tournament. Home to the family now."
Later on in the evening session Carter comfortably beat David Gilbert 5-1.
Carter took the opening three frames and although Gilbert hit a century in the fourth he couldn't build any momentum.
Carter will face Xiao Guodong in the semi-finals after he won a 5-4 thriller over compatriot Yuan Sijun.
The entire match was a tense affair with both players having to rely on mistakes from the other.
Teenager Yuan won a couple of extremely tight frames but he was unable to stop his more experienced opponent from claiming victory.
Earlier in the day Gilbert had whitewashed 2018 runner-up Ding Junhui.
Gilbert, who recently notched the 147th 147 break began with a tone-setting century break of 101 and doubled his lead with a 66.
He then knocked in his second ton of the match with a 138 break, the second highest of the tournament thus far.
Gilbert finished off the win with a break of 74 to finish off a shell-shocked Ding who could only manage 33 points in total.
World number one Mark Selby is also through to the quarter-finals having beaten Noppon Saengkham 4-2.
Selby knocked in two half-century breaks to take the opening frame but after that no player could make a break of 50 or higher.
Selby went three frames up but Saengkham was able to claw it back to 3-2.
However, he couldn't force a decider as Selby sealed victory and set up a quarter-final clash with Masters champion Judd Trump.
There was another whitewash as Kyren Wilson beat former world champion Stuart Bingham 4-0.
