With the first six qualifying from each of the two heats, Coultas narrowly missed out on reaching Saturday's final.
Coultas impressed with both runs, posting 81.00 and 84.50, but the latter was an agonising 0.5 points behind USA’s Redmond Gerard, who finished sixth with 85.00 in the first heat.
Nicholls meanwhile bounced back from a disappointing 30.00 first run to score 81.25 in his second, but that was only enough to finish 11th in the same half as Coultas.
Morgan was GB’s sole representative in an 18-strong field in the second heat, and after scoring 87.50 with his first run, he improved that to 90.50 with this second.
It was enough for Morgan to qualify sixth in the second heat. New Zealand’s Carlos Garcia Knight set the highest score in qualifying with a staggering 97.50.
