Penalty heartbreak for England as Spain win U17 Euros

England have been hugely impressive throughout the tournament and one of their brightest stars, Callum Hudson-Odoi, opened the scoring in the 18th minute when he cut inside from the left and curled a shot into the top corner.

Replays showed that the shot had taken a deflection but no-one was taking it away from Hudson-Odoi.

Spain responded through right-back Mateu Morey who got forward well to finish off a good team move as the teams went in level at half-time.

England, who were kept ticking over by George McEachran in midfield, went ahead after the restart when the ball broke to Phil Foden, who rifled into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

But, right in the dying seconds of the game, Spain equalised as Nacho Diaz headed home, with the previously-excellent Josef Bursik letting himself down, sending the game straight to penalties.

Aiden Barlow scored the first spotkick for England before Abel Ruiz and then Morey scored for Spain as the teams used the new ABBA format for taking spot-kicks.

Rhian Brewster and Joel Latibeaudiere both missed their penalties for England before Sergio Gomez and then Víctor Chust secured the win.
