Miho Takagi makes history with world all-round speed skating title

Miho Takagi became the first Asian speed skater, male or female, to ever win the world allround title after winning Saturday's 1500m in Amsterdam.

The Japanese skater, who won 1500m silver, 1000m bronze and team pursuit Olympic gold in PyeongChang last month, had already won the 500m on Friday and finished second in the 3000m.
After winning the 1500m on Saturday afternoon, with a time of 1:58.82, only finished fourth in the 5000m – 3.08s behind winner Ireen Wust.
But she had already done enough to take the victory with a total of 166.905 points, 0.853 ahead of the Netherlands' Wust, with fellow Dutchwoman Annouk van der Weijden further back in third.
In the men's event, which concludes on Sunday with the 1500m and 10,000m, Patrick Roest leads things after fine performances in the 500m and 5,000m.
The Dutchman won the 500m in a time of 36.97s, ahead of Poland's Konrad Niedzwiedzki who stopped the clock on 37s dead.
Roest then finished fourth in the 5,000m, with Norway's Sverre Lunde Pedersen taking the victory in a time of 6:33.81, with defending champion Sven Kramer in second.
Those results leave Roest on 76.677 points, with Pedersen in second on 76.801 and Kramer on 76.845.
