Tom Sykes takes pole position as he edges towards Troy Corser's record
Tom Sykes edged to within one pole position of all-time World Superbike record holder Troy Corser on Saturday, after recording his 42nd career pole.
The Brit celebrated his 32nd birthday at the Lausitzring in Germany, topping all of the free practice sessions.
Despite missing out on any pole positions at the beginning of the year, Sykes notched up Kawasaki's 70th pole in the series and four back-to-back superpoles.
Kawasaki had even more success as Jonathan Rea took second place behind Sykes, warding off competition from Milwaukee Aprilia's Lorenzo Savadori in the final laps.
Nonethless, Savadori took his first front row and Milwaukee Aprilia's first top-three spot of the year.
