Lowes pips Rea to pole in Assen

The British rider was fastest during qualifying in Holland.
British rider Alex Lowes claimed his first-ever Superpole after denying Jonathan Rea in the closing stages of qualifying in Assen.
World Superbike Championship leader Rea (Kawasaki) had led for most of the session but compatriot Lowes (Yamaha) timed his move to perfection to become the fourth rider to head the Superpole 2 in four rounds this season.
Xavi Fores (Ducati) completes the front row while Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia) heads the second row after enjoying his best qualifying of the year.
Marco Melandri (Ducati) will start race one in fifth with Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) sixth.
Home hope Michael van der Mark (Yamaha), Chaz Davies (Ducati) and Jordi Torres (MV Agusta) make up the third row.
Rea came into the weekend with a 12-point lead at the top of the championship.
