Aljaz Bedene lasted just 12 minutes against Alexander Zverev at the Shanghai Masters before retiring for the second time in two weeks.
The British number two is struggling with a right knee injury but is continuing to play and comfortably defeated Paolo Lorenzi in the first round.
Third seed Zverev was a different matter, though, and, after losing the first four games, Bedene accepted he would not be able to compete and shook hands.
Last week in Beijing, Bedene lost the first 10 games against Roberto Bautista Agut before calling it quits.
