The Frenchman had beaten Cilic in their three previous meetings and a 6-3 4-6 6-0 victory made it four from four as the third seed became the biggest casualty of the tournament so far.

Monfils won his eighth ATP Tour title in Rotterdam two weeks ago to continue a strong start to the season and has set his sights on a return to the top 10.
There were no problems for top seed Kei Nishikori, who defeated Benoit Paire 6-4 6-3, but Danill Medvedev was another seed to fall.

The Russian, who is at a career-high ranking of 15, was surprisingly beaten 6-3 6-3 by qualifier Ricardas Berankis.
Fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, the champion in Marseille last week, was pushed to three sets by Matthew Ebden but continued his winning run with a 6-4 3-6 6-3 success, while sixth seed Borna Coric battled past Jiri Vesely 7-5 3-6 7-6 (4).
At the Brasil Open, sixth seed Jaume Munar raced to a 6-3 6-2 win over qualifier Pedro Sakamoto after just 66 minutes on court.
The Spaniard converted all four of his break points to set up a meeting with Chile’s Christian Garin in the second round.
Seventh seeded Juan Ignacio Londero also progressed after dropping just three points on his first serve to triumph 7-6 (3) 6-1 against Paolo Lorenzi.
His next opponent is Hugo Dellien, who was on court for just over an hour as he swept past Spanish qualifier Pedro Martinez 6-1 6-2.
Former finalist Albert Ramos-Vinolas took a 6-1 6-3 victory over Facundo Bagnis, while home favourite Thiago Monteiro fell to Norway’s Casper Ruud 6-3 6-4.
And Brazilian teenager Thiago Seyboth Wild – a wild card here – battled past Elias Ymer 6-3 4-6 6-2 for the first ATP Tour main draw win of his career.
