Zverev made the last four at the Ricoh Open last week before succumbing to the big-serving Gilles Muller and the 20-year-old impressed again in Halle to overcome Kohlschreiber.
It was his first win against the world number 56 in three attempts and came without a single break point conceded. Zverev for his part is yet to drop serve in the tournament.

"I'm very satisfied because Philipp is someone who can play very well on grass," Zverev told the official ATP website.
"He mixes it up well with his slice and serve, so he's always a difficult opponent on this surface.
"I'm glad I could win in two sets and have the feeling I played well."
Zverev will now play Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut, who needed three sets to beat Dustin Brown 6-4 1-6 7-6 (8/6).

Another young talent Dominic Thiem, however, failed to make it through as he endured a surprise defeat to Holland's world number 42 Robin Haase.
Haase saved three set points en route to a 6-3 7-6 (9/7) victory, which secures his first quarter-final in Halle at the fifth attempt.
Thiem had been hoping to sustain momentum after his run to the French Open semi-finals earlier this month but the Austrian's first serve let him down and he paid the price.
"It was not the best start I've had. The first set was pretty average," Thiem said.
I played good in the second set and had a lot of chances but he played those set points well and was playing well overall. I hope to get some matches next week (in Antalya) and then get ready for Wimbledon.
Haase will now go up against Frenchman Richard Gasquet, who breezed past Australia's Bernard Tomic 6-3 6-3.
