NADAL 6-7 7-6 4-5 GOFFIN. Nadal battling to the very end. He poses the serve-out question to Goffin with some crunching forehands that have been conspicuous by their absence for long periods tonight. Over to David now. Can he FINALLY get this done and serve out for one of the biggest wins of his career?
NADAL 6-7 7-6 3-5 GOFFIN. Le Goff finally showing some steel to keep Rafa firmly at arm's length. He's one game away from the victory he must have felt he was on the verge of over half an hour ago.
Probably less than 80 per cent.
NADAL 6-7 7-6 3-4 GOFFIN. Nadal's prowess at the net gets him over the line to 30. Goffin still has the break advantage, but Rafa will be hoping the Belgian's nerves kick in again.
NADAL 6-7 7-6 2-4 GOFFIN. There's one back! As soon as he's written off, Nadal digs deeper than most. Goffin will be disappointed after being so close to a 5-1 lead. The Belgian is doing it the hard way, but remains favourite to clinch it from here against a struggling opponent.
We will need video evidence of the push-ups, Brad!
PHOTO: On Sunday, Rafa left this court with a smile after picking up the year-end No.1 trophy. Tonight, he'll leave with a grimace and a problem with the knee that could mean a premature end to his season.
BREAK! - NADAL 6-7 7-6 1-4 GOFFIN. It's another break - and even Rafa might find this mountain too big to climb.
NADAL 6-7 7-6 1-3 GOFFIN. Le Goff consolidates to love. Nadal up against it once more. Can he fight back AGAIN? This can't be doing that knee problem much good.
BREAK! - NADAL 6-7 7-6 1-2 GOFFIN. Nadal keeps fighting - but this time Goffin won't be denied. The Spaniard saves two break points to reach the sanctuary of deuce, but opts for a horrible drop shot on Goffin's third opportunity that gifts the Belgian the break as it floats horribly wide.
Might be worth warming up, just in case...
NADAL 6-7 7-6 1-1 GOFFIN. Just what Goffin needed. He eases to a hold to 15 to get on the board and put those missed chances behind him.
NADAL 6-7 7-6 1-0 GOFFIN. Nadal makes sure he stays on the front foot with a hold to 15. Goffin will surely dwell on being so close to victory, but he needs to snap out of it soon and start doing what put him in that position in the first place once again.
SET! - NADAL 6-7 7-6 GOFFIN. From saving four match points to earning four set points - Rafa somehow levels the match, taking the tie break 7-4! That is some fighting spirit from the world No.1.
TB LATEST: Nadal hits back from 0-2 to lead 4-2 with a rasping winner down the line and a cute slice-volley at the net.
NADAL 6-7 6-6 GOFFIN. That is resilience and class mixed together for pure theatre. Once again Rafa stares down the barrel at 0-40. It's triple match point, but somehow he summons some of his best shot-making to roar back, taking five points on the spin and force a TB. The crowd go wild, but Goffin is surely the favourite in the breaker.....isn't he?
Agree with this sadly.
NADAL 6-7 5-6 GOFFIN. Rafa just can't build any sustained momentum. He doesn't have the usual power, hence his low winner count. He's starting to visibly hobble when he overexerts. Goffin easily holds and will come out all guns blazing again now. He has the minimum of a TB - or glory.
NADAL 6-7 5-5 GOFFIN. An explosion of emotion from Rafa as he stares defeat in the face - and then somehow gets Goffin to blink. A piledriver of a backhand down the line tees up match point for the Belgian who then drags agonisingly wide with Nadal on the ropes after a pulsating rally. Nadal plays it smart from deuce and will fight on... for now.
BREAK! - NADAL 6-7 4-5 GOFFIN. The world No.1 survives! Goffin is two points away from a huge win, but Rafa responds with two stoking backhand winners to snare break back point. He doesn't have to do anything to convert as Goffin double faults. Deja vu.
BREAK! - NADAL 6-7 3-5 GOFFIN. Wow. Goffin breaks and will serve for the match. Le Goff curls a banana shot into the postage stamp with a forehand winner on the run in the first point of the game, and it even gets Rafa's seal of approval. The Spaniard battles hard, but can't halt an inspired opponent. Now, can the Belgian control those nerves?
NADAL 6-7 3-4 GOFFIN. The Goffin game-plan continues to reap rewards. Nadal doesn't come close to putting him under pressure as another easy hold is secured rather rapidly.
NADAL 6-7 3-3 GOFFIN. 'Vamos,' is the shout as Rafa tries to fire himself up. He holds to 15 but he needs to move up a gear if he's to turn the momentum his way. Goffin looks the more likely to hit winners and is controlling the majority of the points.
NADAL 6-7 2-3 GOFFIN. He may have had some issues on his serve, but at the moment Goffin isn't giving Rafa much of a sniff. He drops just one point, again a mistake of his own doing, to stay ahead. No-one could really argue with the suggestion Le Goff has been the better player so far tonight. But can he finish the job? Easier said than done.
NADAL 6-7 2-2 GOFFIN. A correction on a vicious crosscourt forehand sees it called in and gives Rafa a much-needed easy hold to love.
NADAL 6-7 1-2 GOFFIN. A 10th ace of the night clinches a fabulous love hold. Goffin has been superb tonight and right now his confidence is flying.
NADAL 6-7 1-1 GOFFIN. A procession turns into a problem for Nadal as he sees a 40-0 lead erode to deuce. Goffin has Rafa on the ropes, but slaps an attempted winner off the forehand into the net before being outfoxed by an improvised crosscourt slice. Nadal is level, but he's going to need all those fighting qualities he's forged a career out of to get himself into a more comfortable situation here.
NADAL 6-7 0-1 GOFFIN. The No.7 seed is soaring right now. He rampages through a love hold to earn the scoreboard advantage and get Set 2 off to a perfect start.
SET! - NADAL 6-7 GOFFIN. Le Goff has done it! The Belgian blew his chance to serve it out prior to the tie break - and he almost did it here as 5-3 became 5-5. A strong forehand earned him a set point and he duly took it 7-5 off a Nadal error to leave the world No.1 in real trouble.
TB LATEST: Nerves = errors. Both players guilty of blowing some very make-able shots that would have won them the point. It's 3-3 at the change over and still up in the air who will take this opener.
BREAK! - NADAL 6-6 GOFFIN. Put that down to Nadal's aura and legendary status. Goffin pretty much hands him the break back on a platter, hitting two double faults and a tight forehand into the net. Big chance wasted. Will Nadal make him pay in the tie break?
BREAK! - NADAL 5-6 GOFFIN. Magnificent play from Goffin puts him on the verge of taking the opener. A wild forehand on the run lands way long from Nadal to offer up double break point. The Spaniard is bold with a second serve to save one, but a 12th winner off a blistering forehand does the damage for the Belgian, who will now serve for the set.
NADAL 5-5 GOFFIN. Rafa snatches at a forehand return he was expecting to make at 15-15 and from there his chance to up the ante disappears. All square as the prospect of a tie break looms - but can one of them snatch it first, with a break at the death?
NADAL 5-4 GOFFIN. Le Goff disrupts a Rafa rampage by hitting back from 30-0 down with a sizzling crosscourt return winner. It's a game of eye-catching points as Nadal shrugs it off with some imperious play at the net before a big first serve seals the deal.
NADAL 4-4 GOFFIN. A super response by Goffin. He takes full advantage of the new balls, concluding a love hold with his fifth ace of the night so far.
NADAL 4-3 GOFFIN. Nadal uses those famous battling qualities to turn a tricky scenario into a winning one from 15-30 down. He's got his nose in front at the business end of the set.
BREAK! - NADAL 3-3 GOFFIN. Just the tonic for Rafa. Goffin's level dips and a double fault offers up two break points. The Belgian dictates the next rally and has Nadal on the rack, but the Spaniard makes him play one last shot that the No.7 seed slaps into the net from mid-court. A bad miss and a costly one too. All square.
NADAL 2-3 GOFFIN. No obvious signs of an issue with the knee, but Nadal's game is not quite right. The winners aren't flowing while uncharacteristic errors are leaking off that trademark forehand. He mixes it up by attacking the net and gets some reward before a couple of first serves keep him in contention in this opener.
NADAL 1-3 GOFFIN. Break consolidated in style. Goffin follows a double fault with a trio of aces. Not much Rafa could do about that.
BREAK! - NADAL 1-2 GOFFIN. Le Goff gets his reward for a very sharp start here. The seventh seed has really gone after Nadal, who can only loop an awkward forehand long at double break point down to drop serve all too easily.
NADAL 1-1 GOFFIN. Real belief from the Belgian. He obviously feels he can compete against Nadal on this surface, particular as the Spaniard's topspin forehand doesn't bounce as high. He saunters through a solid hold after dropping the first point, finishing it off with a swift winner to Rafa's left flank. No sign of knee troubles as of yet for the world No.1.
NADAL 1-0 GOFFIN. Nadal relies heavily on some big first serves and an ace to come through a testing opening service game from deuce. Le Goff shows he can be a real shot-maker, hitting a corking backhand winner down the line to make it interesting from 40-15 down.
Here we go; Nadal will serve first.
Nadal spoke about that knee on the eve of the tournament.... many observers are convinced he's not fully fit. That knee is about to come under some serious scrutiny, as the players appear on court to great receptions.
Grigor Dimitrov currently tops Pete Sampras group after his three-set victory over Dominic Thiem earlier.
HEAD-TO-HEAD: The players have met twice before with Nadal victorious on both occasions earlier this year on clay. The Spaniard won 6-3 6-1 in the semi finals at Monte Carol and ran out 7-6 6-2 in the last eight in Madrid.
Goffin on Nadal: “He's the toughest opponent to start this campaign here at the ATP Finals. It’s not going to be easy. It’s our first meeting on hard courts indoors; we played some good matches on clay, in Madrid for example ... I’m sure I can play some good tennis against him.”
