And that’s the match! Kyrgios ends it in style, with a third straight hold to love. He really got into gear and despite a couple of dropped service games that’s as smooth as you are going to get from the unseeded Australian.
Onto the second round for Kyrgios.
FERREIRA SILVA 4-6 4-6 *3-5 KYRGIOS
Kyrgios has been simply supreme on serve in the past three games, and a second hold to love in a row moves him to 5-3 and within a game of the match.

After a routine hold apiece it’s FS who crumbles on serve, handing Kyrgios three break points. The Australian converts the second and he motors ahead in this third set.

You break, I break. Kyrgios takes a step closer to the second round with a break in the opening game, but takes a little step back when he gets broken to love.

Super stuff from Kyrgios, who holds to love and with it takes the second set. He didn’t face a single break point all set and has looked more and more assured as the match has gone on. One set away now from the second round.
FERREIRA SILVA 4-6 4-5* KYRGIOS
Kyrgios brings up a first set point of this second set but FS battles to hold and it’s now 5-4, with Kyrgios about to serve for the set.

FERREIRA SILVA 4-6 2-3* KYRGIOS
Kyrgios grinds FS down and breaks to lead 3-2. As the match has gone on the Aussie has looked more and more composed, and a set and a break up he is in a good place. As it stands.
FERREIRA SILVA 4-6 2-1* KYRGIOS
Feels like both players are a little more settled this set. FS needs two deuces before holding, and we’re on serve early doors in the second set.
FERREIRA SILVA 4-6 1-0* KYRGIOS
A hold for FS to begin the second set, including a volley which draws an appreciative applause from the crowd as well as Kyrgios.

It was a battle at the beginning, with three games taking 25 minutes alone, but Kyrgios has asserted his dominance and takes the opening set with a hold to love.

“Have some respect for the kid… It’s not funny.” We could just spend the whole match transcribing what is said. That was Kyrgios after a supporter needlessly shouted “Aussie!” when FS was about to serve. The Portuguese holds, and Kyrgios says “well done” after his opponent wasn’t put off by the fan screaming out.
Kyrgios asks the umpire to send out a warning to the crowd, and he calls for them not to shout out during first and second serves.
FERREIRA SILVA *3-5 KYRGIOS
Kyrgios in control now. For now… And you really can hear (without the comms) how much this crowd are cheering him on. After a shaky start he’s on top and a game away from the opening set.

Kyrgios sneaks ahead in this match for the first time, and you get the sense he is feeding on the crowd that are inside. Not the packed out court he would truly thrive on, but they’re getting behind their man as he breaks for the second time.
FERREIRA SILVA *3-3 KYRGIOS
“CHEEKY!” No comms on this Kyrgios match, and so you can hear EVERYTHING going on… That was the response from someone in the crowd as Kyrgios hits his first and probably not last underarm serve of the match. He holds and we’re on serve still.
FERREIRA SILVA 3-2* KYRGIOS
“Good start champ!” and then some stuff we can’t repeat from Kyrgios, who chucks his racquet onto the ground and shakes his head after losing the game. He’s frustrated with someone sitting in the box, but not sure who!
FERREIRA SILVA *2-2 KYRGIOS
A far more routine hold for Kyrgios this time. Barely a minute to take it to 15, and that levels up the scores.

A quality tussle already this, and early signs are it could go on for a while! More deuces on the FS (we’re going FS for Ferreira Silva…. By the way) serve.
Both players see two chances to win the game come and go, and then make that three as a third Kyrgios break point opportunity is wasted.
Break point No 4 for Kyrgios… but FS saves it with a smash.
Break point NUMBER FIVE. Into the net…. Onto deuce No 8!
22 minutes down and this is only the third game.
BREAK POINT NUMBER SIX. And it’s wasted again by Kyrgios as he goes long.
And now a SEVENTH BREAK POINT saved… A superb winner from FS which prompts Kyrgios, it sounds like, to ask for someone’s girlfriend to get out of his box in the stands…
Never mind, he converts BREAK POINT NUMBER NINE. And it’s back on serve. He’s shaking his head though, despite breaking.

Well, well! Kyrgios looks in control at 30-15 but a sloppy volley into the net makes it 30-30. He then loses the next point and at the first chance of breaking Ferreira Silva sends a winner past the Australian to take the early advantage.

A six-minute opening game where Ferreira Silva battles to a hold, saving one break point in the process. That’ll be a nerve-settler for him.
