Jo-Wilfried Tsonga ends Dan Evans' fairytale to add to British pain

Dan Evans’ remarkable run at the Australian Open came to an end in a four-set defeat to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the fourth round.
The British number three took a huge stride towards the quarter-final by pinching a first set tie-break, but 12th seed Tsonga recovered to claim a 6-7(4) 6-2 6-4 6-4 win.
Evans was the last British man in the Melbourne draw after Andy Murray’s shock exit to Mischa Zverev, but it was a brief stand as his fairytale run failed to produce another chapter.
His run to the fourth round included high-profile wins over Marin Cilic and Bernard Tomic, as well as the revelation he was playing in sponsor-less t-shirts after Nike dropped him for 2017.
Evans will climb into the world top 50 following his exploits when the ATP rankings are updated, but there will be frustration that he could not frustrate Tsonga for longer.
Tsonga will face fourth seed Stan Wawrinka for a place in the semi-finals.
